Which NBA teams are tanking season? Heard a radio piece last night where Jeremy Schaap stated he had
spoken to an NBA exec that demanded anonymity. He told him that
it was a strategy this year to tank the season by stocking the roster with
not yet ready young players and cost saving veterans. The objective -
getting the most ping pong balls in the lottery and taking their 25%
chance of getting the #1 pick. Justifying it by saying you can not
compete in the NBA without that centerpiece player he flat out said
his team would be bad and they were OK with it. Full effort would
be given on the floor but by undermanning the roster he knows they
will have no chance and will achieve the objective of being a favorite
in next years lottery. Other NBA teams are probably operating similarly
this year so there may be a real battle for those ping pong balls.
Bleacher Report picked up on it as well and pretty much sums up the
GMs thoughts and justifications:

The list of possible teams will have a few real strong candidates once you
examine their off-season moves and current roster. More then one team
has probably conceded they will be bad and are not actually looking to
improve their roster and go from 20some wins to 30some wins. There is
little to gain there. Season Wins are still up for every bad, non big market
team except for Orlando. So who is tanking and how do you bet to take advantage?
The list of possible tankers and their season win totals:
Charlotte Bobcats - 26.5 OV -135
- Don't think Jordan is smart enough to implement this effectively
plus his team already has had shots at high picks last few years.
The best player of our generation might also be the worst head of a team.
Dallas Mavericks - 43.5 OV -115
-They aren't all that bad now but Cuban is the type that might run
with this if he was convinced it was the right move. His ego may not
allow it so although they make sense as a team stuck in the middle
and long in the tooth, the odds are not great they'd go this route.
Cleveland Cavaliers - 40 OV-115
-They have Kyrie Irving so one more stud might do the trick. They are
a non big market team but I think they are holding out hope they get
LeBron back. That is their ticket to the promised land. The Browns
are already implementing this type of strategy so at least Clevelanders
are used to this but they aren't tanking. They have their superstar.
Detroit Pistons - 40 OV -130
-Don't think so even though they won just 29 games last year.
Joe Dumars approached the off-season aggressively. They
added rookies with the #8 pick and two second round picks plus
signed free agent Josh Smith to a big contract. No tank here.
Milwaukee Bucks - OV 29 -115
-Now we're talking. Small market team, drafted a guy who was questionable
to see the court this year due to still being obligated to his European team in
Giannis Antetokounmpo. Looks like he will be on roster but he won't play much.
They traded Brandon Jennings away for Brandon Knight and two projects.
Off season signings included ZaZa Pachulia, Gary Neal and OJ Mayo.
They did not break into regular programming on ESPN to announce any of
those big transactions. These are filler players that are lateral moves at best.
Bucks are not a team "to watch out for" even though they have a virtually
new roster from what they finished last year with. Shaky chemistry to start the
season along with undefined and shifting roles should insure a slow start.
New Orleans Pelicans - 40.5 OV -115
-Acquired Jrue Holliday from possible tank-team 76ers. Other moves in
off season suggest they are operating aggressively. Not a candidate.
Philadelphia 76ers - 16.5 OV -115
-How do you bet UN 16.5 season wins? Don't think you can but the 76ers
are clearly devoid of win-now talent and whether they like it or not will
be at the very least, the co-favorite out of the gate for a pile of ping ping balls.
Phoenix Suns - 19.5 OV -115
-Suns will have something to say come draft day and might be the
favorite when you look at the experience and talent they have on the roster.
A complete team overhaul is in progress and with that comes the
"taking our lumps" period which may last the whole season.
They will suck and they know it.
Sacramento Kings - 31 OV -120
-Kings fans are just glad the team is not in Seattle. Actually like this
bet UN a little. What's left from last year is a cranky Demarcus Cousins.
There are new faces to surround him but Kings fans will give the team
a pass for at least this season just on gratitude for not relocating.
Utah Jazz - 25 OV -120
-Perfectly positioned to make a move in the draft with two first round picks
in 2014, the Jazz unloaded their two big guys in Milsap and Al Jefferson.
They added some young players and locked up a couple others with
signings. Salary-wise and their roster composition suggests the Jazz are
clearly pointing to the following couple of years as ones where they will
make great strides. As usual there will be spots to play on them at home
through-out the season and spots to fade them on the road.
Boston Celtics - 27.5 OV -130
-Celtics clearly in rebuilding mode after moving Garnett and Price but they
still look a little too good to be a rock-bottom team. Danny Ainge is an
aggressive guy and would not be surprised if more moves occur to really
put them in the running for strong lottery position. New coach will work
with whatever he is handed and don't think the faithful will complain.
Look for Ainge to sell high any veteran who starts well and garners interest.
