New Member - old school Vegas returning for a visit

Hello!

I recently joined as an LVA member on 3/30/2011 for the 1st time I was pleased to have received my MROs booklet in the mail very quickly within the week after signing up, especially living in a rural area of Pennsylvania.

For Mother's Day week (5/7-5/14), I am taking my 91 year old mom back to Vegas. Our last visit was sometime in the late 80s. To give you an idea of how long it's been, Treasure Island just opened for business and I still have the Silver City refrigerator magnet giveaways. The wife will be unable to join us due to her work-at-home business committments so it will be just mom and i - a chance for us to reflect on Old Vegas and take in New Vegas.

We're staying the first 6 nights in a 2BR timeshare (Summer Bay Resorts on Koval directly behind Harrahs) and using a comp night at Rio for the last night since we're Total Rewards members from frequenting Atlantic City. BTW, the last day of our trip happens to be Friday the 13th - a good day to frequent the casinos!

My day job keeps me quite busy with timeshare exchange company, RCI, as a Senior Business Analyst or as my wife calls me, a computer geek. Of course in reality and in Vegas, I consider myself a rocket scientist, having experience with NASA as a Physicist and research assistant at Langley AFB in Virginia during my younger grad school years. It does not take Rocket Science to understand the house odds of the casino games, and I can legitimately tell u

I do not have to ask what has changed in Vegas in the past 20+ years since we've been there last. In planning for the trip, I did my research and already purchased a Beatles Love ticket on the Circ website (25% off advanced purchase). Friends and family members who have seen the show, call this a must for me. Being a Beatles fanatic, this will be the highlight of the trip.

On the gambling front, I am big on VP and Pai Gai Poker. Both have decent players odds. Mom is into Penny Slots and a Bingo fanatic - many thanks to the Bingo posters in these forums - we plan on hitting most of the Station casinos and South Point during our trip for Bingo and Slots. We may take in the magic show at the Flamingo.

I plan to provide a trip report with our impressions of the changes, the pros, and the cons, and how we fare with the games, the dining and customer service.

Best of luck to all!

Gary from East Stroudsburg, PA

Welcome, Gary to the group! I think that you will like all of the information that you can get around here.

I hope that you will make good usage of your MRB coupons (and check out the MR Online coupons as well). You can also (if you'd like), get your hands on the now 2011 American Casino Guide book (by Steve Bourie) since besides excellent casino and casino games information, it also has some nice coupons for all kinds of stuff (including Gaming, Dining and Shows) for Las Vegas as well as other casino areas (including Atlantic City). The book's list price is $18.95 but you can get it for less than that (and you can shop around for it) through not only the American Casino Guide website but also through sources like Amazon.com and the Auto Club (AAA) if you're a member there.

To check out the coupons that are offered in that book (and to now see some good instructional videos and to hear some good podcasted interviews with gaming experts), go to their website at: http://www.americancasinoguide.com.

Sahara Casino will be closing entirely down on 5/16 so make sure that you get over there (there are coupons both in the LVA MRB as well as in the American Casino Guide (including a coupon for a $25 Table Games Matchplay coupon).

And something else that you can do there (if you'd like) is (and it's new and old) to get over to the Pinball Hall Of Fame on Tropicana Blvd. where machines back from (I believe) the 1940's onward are available to be played (mostly for $0.25 per game -- except maybe for some of the newer games)!

And also try to get your hands on the Freebie magazines around LV (including "Vegas Values Coupon Book," "24/7 Vegas," "LV2GO," etc.) because you never know what you may find in there!

And yes, LV has changed! And If you like(d) Downtown Las Vegas, check out Fremont Street. It's now a pedestrian walkway covered above by "The World's Largest Television Screen" (called "Viva Vision") which has mostly in the evening a bunch of entertainment (including a light and music show every hour on the hour from about 8PM or so through 12 Midnight). To check that out online, go to http://www.vegasexperience.com (and maybe try to get on their list for coupons as well).

And enjoy your trip!
