Add Clemson coach to the list...
Same game. How about Miami getting a first down at Clemson's 30 yard with 25 seconds to go in the first half with one time out left and calling a time out? Miami HC Randy Shannon has the IQ of a pidgeon. Just spike the ball, moron don't call a timeout when the clock is already stopped. Then to top off the problem they get a delay of game penalty off the time out. Another BCS coach from a major conference earning less than a million dollars. You hire on the cheap you get subpar coaching on the sidelines.
Randy Shannon did NOT call the time out. It was his offensive coordinator, former Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles assistant coach Mark Whipple that called the time out. Shannon was pissed at Whipple and scolded him. The announcers on the broadcast speculated that perhaps Whipple forgot the difference between the NFL and the college rule of clock stoppage to move the chains.
Reply That could be the case. We don't know for sure because the Miami play by play hosts never asked the question to Shannon after the game. I'll give you another situation that very few people even picked up on. Last year versus North Carolina at home up by three points with about 2:00 left in the game. Carolina at the Miami 25 yard line. One of the rare instances that Miami had all three time outs. Carolina bleeds the clock down and throws a TD with about 25 seconds left in the game from about 20 yards away. Miami never used a time out. The correct play was to use your time outs and give yourself about 1:30 to 1:40 left on the clock. They were either going to miss the FG. In that case you win and who cares if you used your time outs. Second scenario. If they tie the game up with a FG and you have at least 1:30 left on the clock your in great shape to win the game with a FG. Last scenario. If they score a TD with 1:30 left you still have enough time to come down and go the length of the field in college football with the clock stopping after each first down. Randy Shannon's a nice guy and I'm glad he has turned around the rpogram doing it the right way but he was voted by the other 67 BCS coaches as the worst coach in college football for a reason. Great guy, the kids are staying in school and not getting in trouble, he is a very good recruiter but as a head coach on game day he's just plain bad.
