CFL this weekend Looking forward to see if there are any plays from Alf and Londo this weekend. I'll just hit some quick thoughts of my own.
(1) I think Edmonton is for real. I have seen 2 of their games. Of course they won them so there is a bias. The opener was Edmonton +4 in that game against Calgary. That was probably a sharp bet. But Calgary is still a good team. It is a pretty big game for an early season. Think it will be fun to watch. Betting on the letdown of Edmonton might be a letdown. They could still get up for this game and maybe let down later.
I really think Edmonton improvement starts from the top down. They hired Tillman as GM who has a very good track record and they improved last year late. He gets a new head coach who is hungry but experienced. They hired Stubler as defensive coach and he's been around too and respected although Argo fans will remember when he was the coach a few years ago and they stunk. And actually the head coach of Edmonton Reed was one of his assistants so there you go. But new offensive coach Crandall who was a pretty good QB. I think they always had a few players. Ray is a solid QB.
(2) There are some Winnipeg +3.5 out there but many books down to 3. There has to be some chance that the Argos just suck. It would be surprising because Barker is a good coach and been around but they do seem to lack weapons. Boyd's injured, they are light at wide receiver and they have a few key injuries on D which is their strength.
I don't know how good Winnipeg is and it is the Argos first home game. My thoughts are they might stink. Lemon looks stinky I can tell you that. I figured out why the NFL cut him but I can't figure out how he actually played in it.
(3) BC/Hamilton not much to say. I didn't see Hamilton's win so anytime I saw them they stunk. They have a lot of players though and probably should be better. BC sort of surprised me and lost last weekend but I didn't see it. The first few games they don't run the ball and they have receivers who drop passes alot. Anybody think of another way to move a football offensively?
I did think of something. Wally Buono he was called out for that stupid going for a FG in the first game late and then in the second game he calls a timeout late which made no sense at all since they needed a timeout later. The announcers fingered him there too. He's been around forever and maybe he's always made these decisions I don't know. He's been successful. We'll cut him a break but the team is obviously iffy.
This line got chopped half a point to from +3.5 to +3. I'm not the only one who bets dogs I guess. Hamilton always stinks when they go out west.
(4) Saskatchewan and Montreal. I didn't see the game they played a few weeks ago.
But I will say this I did see Marshall is their head coach and I saw the guy that Edmonton fired last year as head coach as their DC. And I didn't mind the guy (I already forgot his name) but he may have been shaky as head coach. Marshall gets a lot of respect I think he's been around. Tillman is not their GM. And they've lost players too from when they were good.
Have to think they do probably stink. It starts at the top and it is not looking good.
Montreal is great. We all know that. Best coach, 40 year old QB is best QB, best system, great city in the summer.
Sask was +12 but they bet them a bit too. That might be a dog I won't even touch.
We'll see what happens.
