Free furniture?:

Free furniture?: I just saw an ad for Walker Furniture in Las Vegas, saying that any and all furniture bought there between now and 2 pm Sunday will be free if the opening kick-off of the SB is returned for a TD. Pretty creative. Does anyone have access to a database that would tell how many opening SB kickoffs have been returned? Or a bigger sample for NFL games (or both)? I'd like to do something with this for a column I'm writing.

Back in 2000, Baltimore and the NY Giants had two KO returns for TD's and then the Bengals-Niners saw Cincy take one to the house...
Basically they are betting "no" on a prop lined around -18,500. Yes is +7,000. Great move on their part, if it results in more sales. Say they sell 100K worth of furniture the next 2 days. They just go and toss $15 on the "yes" and make money either way. People who buy furniture because of that promotion are too dumb to breathe this air.
People who buy furniture because of that promotion are too dumb to breathe this air.
Unless you were ready to buy anyway and had targeted Walker as the place you wanted to buy from. Then it's a pure value-added (and an exciting 10-second sweat).
Also of note, a kickoff opening the second half in the SB has never been returned for a TD. Remarkably, a punt has never been returned for a TD in the SB.

And guaranteed some dumbass people are going to go there just because of that deal and buy something they could get elsewhere for a better price.
Oops. Misread the lines. Didn't think it would be that high.
Anthony if you are doing an article on it you may want to check into Jordan's Furniture based out of Boston. At least once they have done something similar. I believe a month long promotion in March or April where if you bought a living room or dining room set and The Red Sox won the World Series then it would be free. I believe they paid out in 2007. Pretty good press as it got a ton of promotion in the Boston area, gave good will to their predominantly BoSox fan clientele, and was paid out by the Insurance Company.
No kidding. That would have worked well. But less enthused now that I see what the number is on this.
