Is it me or is Stoops an idiot? I didn't see it as I had already won my 2H O25' but it looks like OKL scored with 6 minutes to go to make it 36-27 - and Big Game Bob went for 2 and missed, making it a 9 point, 2 score game vs kicking the XP making it a one score 8 point game. I think it was Maxwell Smart nemisis Harry Who who said "Amasing".

They called their last time-out with 14 seconds to go when they had a first down instead of spiking the ball. The clock stops on 1st downs, all they have to do is line up over the ball and spike it when the ref starts the clock. They were lined up over the ball in time, so they can't use the excuse they weren't ready. 2, 3 seconds max will run off the clock if they spike it. They aren't going to get 4 plays off anyway in 14 seconds, no matter what they do, so spike it and save the last time-out to stop the clock and bring in the kicker, since the score is 31-30 and they are at about the 35-40 yard line of Wisky. Of course, the QB dumps the ball off to the running back, he can't get out of bounds and the clock runs off, so instead of getting a 52 yard field goal attempt to win the game (Michael Meyer, the Iowa kicker, has been good from 56 yards so he had a realistic shot), the clock runs out and Wisky starts the party. And how much do these coaches get paid? Too much if they're gonna make calls like this. "We wanted to burn the timeout and just go from there. I guess we could have gone the other way. Might have saved us 2 seconds," Ferentz said. "I don't think that was exactly the turning point in the game." No, just the point that would have won you game. My humble Opinion On Stoops I understand Stoops approach. He's down 9 points with 6 minutes to go and only ONE timeout left after just scoring a TD, and before the extra point/two point conversion attempt. He's gotta go for 2 no matter what, either now or after the 2nd TD to try to tie it up. If he makes the 2 point conversion after the first TD, Okl is down only 7 and only needs 1 more score (TD obviously) to tie it up. He can play defense and try to get the ball back by stopping Mizzo and getting the ball back thru a punt. If he misses the 2 point conversion after the first TD, he now knows he needs 2 more scores within 6 minutes and only 1 more time out, so he'll go for the onside kick, thus increasing his chances of getting two scores within 6 minutes. Odds still suck for his team, but at least he's smart enough to try to figure out most likely what he needs to do to give himself the best chance of winning. He knows that if he kicks off deep needing 2 scores in 6 minutes and only 1 timeout left, Mizzo will have at least 1 possession and they will probably run off 2 minutes or more off the clock, giving Okl 4 minutes to score twice, which is possible, but they also have to recover an onside kick, which is only about 17% (1 in 6). He knows he'll probably have to hold Mizzo two times without them getting a first down, which now gives him about 2 minutes total for two possessions to score twice, or 2 and a half minutes of offense to score twice without any timeouts because he's going to use his one timeout on defense to save the entire 25 seconds. His decision for two after the first touchdown and then go for the onside kick after the two-point attempt fails shows that he has probably thought this scenario out in advance and has planned for it. He made a smart, and imo, the right play to optimize his team's chances of winning the game.

Going for 2 is clearly the right mathematical call. You want to know as early as you can whether you need 1 or 2 more scores. That said, punting on 4th down with 2:30 left down 9 is retarded.
