My Final Big Ten Power Ratings, Is the Big 10 Down?

My Final Big Ten Power Ratings, Is the Big 10 Down? OHIO State 7-1 83.5 PSU 6-2 83.5 Iowa 6-2 78.5 (sans Stanzi, with him Iowa is in the low 80s) Whisky 5-3 75 NWU 5-3 70.5 Mich St 4-4 73 Purdue 4-4 71 Minny 3-5 64 (sans Decker, boy are they going to miss this guy next year!) Ill 2-6 65/66.5 (pre bye, post bye rating) Michigan 69.5 IND 66 Conclusion: Big 10 pretty down this year, but the bottom looking very strong. That may well spell trouble for the Big 10 bowl teams, as the bottom feeders hung in there very well, so maybe the top of the conference is overrated. As John Kelly has said, NWU is a good barometer.......NWU is very rarely any good, so if they can have a winning record, the big 10 is VERY down. Curiously, I had Mich too high to start the year at 72, and I think I have them too high to end it at 69.5! I think I consistently overrated this team. It matched the spreads each week, so I wasn't betting them, but I should have had them lower, and I would have gone 4-0-1 fading these guys down the stretch.

Glad he went to Michigan instead of Bama!
I think Dick Rod gets another year. AD is a lame duck, and I think they will wait until next year to see if things progress as poorly as it's gone, and will let the new AD pick his own guy. For those who are calling for Dick Rod's head, the flavor of the month seems to be either Jim Harbaugh or Brian Kelly as his replacement. They have a QB coming up from Inkster, MI that's supposed to be the real deal.
I think PSU is too high. Who did PSU beat this year to earn that rating? Iowa won @ PSU OSU won @ PSU PSU was tied with NW going into 4thQ until NW QB Kafka got hurt. I think Indiana played PSU pretty tough as well going off of memory. thanks for the ratings... do you have specific home field adjustments or just one adjustment across the board?

No specific HFA numbers by team....... I do think that going forward I am going to fade economically depressed states. Who really in their right mind wants to live in Michigan right now? No reason to think this program longterm is going to rise back up. Further, we can forecast a decline in Ohio State as well, similar economics, just not so bad AND the crappy weather, overall misery factor. There is a reason the Big 12 N SUCKS, and the Big12 S is good. OF course, I would expect Colo to be good as I rate this a nice place to live and go to School. Further, people have moved to the SouthWest and out of the rust belt. More people means more good athletes, and it is not like new Universities with Football pedigrees are popping up everywhere. Sure, SFLA has appeared, but no reason to not expect the 'good' places to live to keep having better and better luck. So the Nebraskas/Michigan's/Wvirg's fade, while Florida, Texas, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, TCU, South Flas, Mias, ncaros, Cal, stanfords, BYUs, Utahs, etc. thrive. I am a young guy, Where do I want to live? a) Austin b) So CAl C) No cal d) Oregon e) Utah f) Fla g) Mich h) W Virg i) Ohio j) Conn k) N Caro G,H,I stand out as "NO WAY".
Wondering ! You make Zook's team higher AFTER Cinn. Cinn off a bye also for this game. Do you feel "look ahead" for Cin with Pit next up? thanks
Interesting. In the past year, about 100,000 people have moved out of the State of Michigan. Stands to reason, for all the things you mention that the more talented athletes are choosing more desirable (for lack of a better word) places. You might be onto something here. Being from San Diego, I've always said SDSU should be a powerhouse - best facilities on the West Coast thanks to Moores (ex Padre's owner) except for an obvious on campus football stadium. But my point was always if you can build a program at Fresno, Boise, Salt Lake, Provo (ever been to Boise? Salt Lake? Logan? Fresno?), etc, can you not build one at SDSU??? Weather, urban, and used to be a perennial Top 10 in Playboy ratings. To me, just like with UNLV in hoops, it always comes down to finding the right coach - Chuck Long, Tom Craft, etc ain't going to do it - you have to find the young Urban Meyer, etc. It's a shame the PAC 10 never let SDSU in - didn't want the recruiting competition for star San Diego players going there (and the list is long - Bush, Allen, Seau, and much more). You know my ex high school (Helix) had Reggie Bush and Alex Smith on same team - tons of talent in San Diego. Shame SDSU is such a joke.
All late season 'bye' teams get power rating upped by 1.5-2 points Gotta do it
Ohio State and Michigan will always be good. They need the right coaches. Ohio State is one of the best programs in the country, How many teams could beat them right now? Very very few. The QB will be a junior next year and should finally get better. Michigan will too as coach Rod enters year 3. I am not buying this "place to live" theory of Fezz.
