from the reno abc home page HHONOLULU – Four days after leading rusher Vai Taua was ruled academically ineligible for the Hawai'i Bowl, the University of Nevada suspended two players for the game after "a violation of team and athletic department policy."
Sophomore linebacker Andre Davis and freshman safety Duke Williams will not play in the Hawai'i Bowl.
Davis has been kicked off of the team.
“I have dismissed Andre Davis from the program immediately and I have suspended Duke Williams for the bowl game,” head coach Chris Ault said in a statement released late Tuesday night. “I want to apologize to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the people of Hawaii and our fans for their conduct.”
This is the second time Williams, a Hug High graduate, has been suspended for a game in the last four-and-a-half weeks.
On Nov. 17, Williams was suspended for the Wolf Pack's game at New Mexico State after he was arrested for being a minor in possession of alcohol.
“This swift action taken by Coach Ault is indicative of his commitment to doing things the right way,” athletics director Cary Groth said. “ This behavior is not representative of the beliefs and ideals of the Nevada football program, the Wolf Pack athletics department or the University of Nevada.”
On Thursday, Nevada plays Southern Methodist is the Hawai'i Bowl at 5pm. The game will air live on ESPN.
