Non-Offensive TD Outburst All data presented here was uncovered on-line with the SDQL.
Since the divisional realignment in 2002 there have been 160 weeks of regular season NFL action. In only eleven of them have been more than ten non-offensive TDs. Two of them came in the last three weeks. In weeks 5 and 7 this season the league had eleven non-offensive TDs. This is a big reason why the games have been higher scoring recently.
It is not surprising that the OU records of the games in weeks 5 and 7 were 9-5 and 10-4 respectively.
What really makes these non-offensive TD numbers impressive is that in weeks 5 and 7 this season, there were only 14 games (four teams had a bye). Most of the other weeks in which there were more than ten non-offensive TDs came in weeks in which all the teams played.
The point here is that the average total in week 7 was 41.6 and the average total for the upcoming week is 43.1. This is the highest average weekly OU line this season and the 16th highest (out of 366) in all the regular season weeks since 1989.
Note that the bye teams might be contributing reason for this, as both Houston and Indianapolis (as well as the Jets and Lions) were off last week. This week the Falcons, Bears, Browns and Ravens are off.
So, are the linesmakers jacking up the OU numbers because of the higher scoring games? Is there an assignable cause for the outburst of non-offensive TDs in weeks 5 and 7? If not, can the bettors capitalize on this by leaning towards the under?
