I would think the optimal play would be to kick the field goal from the 26 yard line, and then go for the onside. You have to be on the 35 yard line at the end of the game to kick a field goal, but you can be 55 yards away and still go for a hail mary in the end zone. Chances have to be better kicking the field goal first.
