Norvinated? Last night, near the end of the OAK/SD game, I wrote this to one of my buddies:
"If Norv Turner isn't fired in the next 3 weeks it is clear SD does not care about winning. Norv made so many awful decisions or lack of decisions in this game that it was embarrassing. And don't even mention the untimely SD penalties. Norv is the root of this team's problems all the way."
Today, ESPN.com's Chad Millman wrote:
"Watch the "surfer boys" play, and you understand why there is one coach who is so bad that he actually costs his team a power rating point when wiseguys make their rankings -- Norv Turner. There is not another coach in the league whose team is downgraded specifically because of him. Coaches, largely, don't matter when it comes to handicapping, no matter whether it's college or pro."
So, I throw out to the board here: Do you agree? Is Norv so bad that those of you who do power rankings adjust downwards because of him? Will the lines ultimately incorporate the negative value his head coaching incompetence adds?
For what it's worth, this is the same guy who was coaching the WAS November 1997 game against NYG when WAS was 1 game back in the division and:
1. Gus Frerotte sprained his neck "head butting" a wall, and,
2. With the game tied at 7-7 with 48 seconds left in OT and WAS at the NYG 38, Michael Westbrook tossed his helmet while arguing a non-catch, incurred a 15 yard penalty, and WAS subsequently missed a 54 yard FG to win.
And, add to this list Rivers fumbling the snap in the KC game this season. The point? - look up "undisciplined" in the dictionary and you see Norv's picture. The only worse jobs for this guy are running a day-care center or dog kennel.
