Oops at the Sportsbook

Oops at the Sportsbook Story is 3rd hand, but I'm curious as to what happens. Guy goes to Vegas book, makes bets, cashes in winners, owes money to cover new bets. Guy behind counter PAYS him difference instead of taking it. Is this just an oops and he's a lucky guy or will they figure it out somehow and if they do, can they demand the money back? Interesting situation. (Please leave morals out of this)
Legally they can probably get the money back. Realistically unless its a giant sum, they are prob gonna let it go. Can't see them going to court over $100. That said, if noticed and not settled, guy's ability to play at that book probably goes away
I think once he leaves the window, he has a shot at being clear. Once he leaves the casino, he's almost certainly clear. If I bet, sat to watch games, and 10 minutes later the sportsbook supervisor came over and explained what happened, AND I could count my dayroll down and concur, I'd make up the difference, though I might want to see the tape to make sure the numbers were right. If I left and came back the next day, I'd say GTFOH. I remember playing blackjack once, going to the cage with chips, remembering that I'd left my jacket at the table, went and got it (maybe 30 feet away), came back and asked for my cash (yes, I'd spaced out) and the cage girl said "What?" With a smirking security guard right there. I was new to gambling at the time (this was 25 years ago) and didn't know there was probably tape to check.
I would never be so lucky to have something like this happen to me, but if any of the new tickets won, I might go after hours to try to cash them in...see if they put a flag on them, etc. If it's not for a large sum of money, I would guess you'd get away with the money pretty easily.

tough to answer w/o discussing morals but if he is a regular there or used a players card he should pay it back. also, as sean said, if he ever wants to bet there again he should pay it back. nevermind the teller possibly will be fired when the drawer doesn't match. big difference between this incident and table game overpay. if he has to win like this he prolly shouldn't be gambling.
big difference between this incident and table game overpay.
How? (I'm not saying it isn't, just wondering how it's different.)
A dealer does not have a drawer to reconcile at the end of its shift. A sports book writer begins a shift by taking a trip to the cage and getting a bank, which is returned at the end of the shift with the requisite paperwork explaining how much money should be there.
I had this happen to me at Stratosphere some years ago. I was cashing some tix and made some new bets. I came back a few weeks later and they said they were $330 short on my transaction (they said they confirmed it on tape). I honestly didn't know and had no reason to doubt them. Their position was they (or the clerk) were going to eat it, but they just wanted to make me aware of it (I wasn't threatened with barring). Since they came off as being certain and weren't being dicks about it, I coughed it up, and they were very grateful. (Obviously, I extorted a meal comp from them for my trouble :)) P.S.-later on I did end up getting booted (from Ariz Charlies and hence Strat) on unrelated matters...so much for karma!
As much as it pains me to say this, the correct answer is to give the money back. Something to do with Karma, or the Golden Rule, or some other BS. Besides, you might get caught.
