Sunday Baseball Took the collar my first two days, look to get back on track here.
Arizona at New York
The Mets haven't fared well against right-handed starters hitting a whopping 32 points worse than lefties at home. Jon Garland has produced eight quality starts in his last nine appearances and has performed very well on the road. His last four road starts were all quality as he allowed 6 earned runs in 26 innings. While not a big strikeout pitcher he produced a strong 16 to 4 strikeout to walk ratio in those away games.
The host counters with Mike Pelfrey who has allowed 9 earned runs in 17 innings against the Diamondbacks. While he hasn't faced Arizona this year they hit .304 against him in 2008. Pelfrey has allowed 19 earned runs in his last five overall starts and his pitch counts have been pushed to the limit. The last four starts he has thrown 445 pitches with the previous one going for 95, but that start only lasted 3 full innings. He is really having a tough time getting the three outs needed each and every inning. Taking a look at his pitches thrown per inning the last five outings show 18.2, 15.9, 24.0, 16.4 and 31.7. These are not the type of numbers we want in a favorite.
The Mets are playing improved ball as of late but they're still not worthy of this pricing. Arizona has taken 5 of the last 7 here and we expect another victory today.
