Texans Blow it Kicking Fgs down 21 and 18, get away with it. NFL coaches should have a fg chart, which should say 'Down by 18 or more, if there is any reasonable option, ALWAYS go for it'. I am beyond frustrated by the bad coach decisions that don't understand that when you are down big, you obviously want to INCREASE variance, not reduce it. Further, Coaches have to realize 2 points conversions are NOT exactly givens.......when you are down 15 it is NOT a 2 possession game, it is a 2.5 possession game. When Houston went for 3s down 21 and 18, I said each time "VERY hard for me to believe this isn't going to force them to convert a much more difficult series of 4th downs LATER in the game to win". They got very lucky later only having to convert 4th and shorts, but my point is that NFL teams routinely don't go for 4th and 6s in the red zone down, 15, and almost always they are forced to go for 4th and 15s later in the game.....you simply HAVE to become a riverboat gambler down this much. Texans played WAY too conservatively, EVERYTHING went right for them late in the game to catch up, but they STILL needed to convert a couple of 4th downs, AND a 2 just to get the game tied.....they should have been going for TDs WAY earlier. The way they played this, they basically needed EVERYTHING to go right JUST TO GET INTO OT.........NOT a good strategy. I see NFL teams do this a lot......they would rather preserve a 5% chance to win, than be aggressive on a 40/60 play that if they MAKE it they have a 20% chance to win, but if they miss, they are drawing dead.......
Completely agree. The banking on 2 point conversions later, which are about 45% propositions, is a major flaw. Many times you are better off just trying to score multiple TD's to win outright, then relying upon a 2 pt conversion later in the game to tie and the parlay of winning a 50% overtime period. There's also the benefit that if you miss on going on 4th down deep in their territory, you are likely to get a conservative set of plays out of the opposition and get the ball back.
I am not sure of the actual stats involved but I thought the 1st field goal down 21 on 4th and goal from the 6 was idiotic but the 2nd one actually made a bit of sense as it did put them down 2 scores and it was from the 24 yd line so still had a ways to go to score even if you made the 1st down.
First, Bill Belichick will do it, and then after he is successful twice, everyone else will start doing it.

watched every second and while it was a close call, I think the coach had it right. After the WR dropped a sure TD on 3rd down, you take the points and keep momentum. If you miss the TD at that point, game over. This way you keep momuntum and hope good things happen. The Ravens did NOt trurn the ball over but the Texas still had enough to battle back. They did it the right way though it took some great execution to get it done.
"They did it the right way though it took some great execution to get it done. " You're aware they they did not in fact, 'get it done', right?
"They did it the right way though it took some great execution to get it done. " You're aware they they did not in fact, 'get it done', right?
They got the game to overtime and had the ball with a chance to win. They made a great comeback. No they did not win the game. WHat are you goign to agree with Fezz that they should have gone for the Touchdown and "blown it". You got to be kidding me. Good luck with that if you do.
It's as if two threads have been merged here with the posts interlaced. JohnnyGun must have started a thread "Texans make the right call by kicking field goals to keep the game entertaining as long as possible for a Monday night Football audience," while everyone else is responding to Fezzik's thread about trying to maximize their chances to actually win the god damn game.
I used to be of the mindset if you are down by 15 you kick the extra point to stay in the game and keep your players interested BUT I realized as Fez said, this is absolutely the wrong move. Most teams will kick the extra point to get down by 8 and still give them a chance. But, more than likely, they then play the game to the end, knowing they have a shot with a two point converstion. And, when that fails, there is little to no time left. They need to go for two after the first touchdown so they know exactly what they have to do to tie the game. As someone else said in the other thread, Tirico, who is usually pretty smart about these things, was adament about not going for two immediately and was wrong in his statement.
Should we argue abortion too? It's an unwinnable arguement. One thing for sure, the OT is a seperate entity. Schaub must have thought it was a moral victory forcing OT.
