Toronto Sun Sports (and even their best picks) I've read enough sports sections over the years and I have to shout out the Toronto Sun sports at the moment as the best I've seen. Now certainly USA Today is probably one that is loaded with a lot of information but the Toronto Sun sports is often coming in at 30 pages each day. (Now the Sun is a tablet so the pages aren't exactly comparable I'll admit). And it is just not roster transactions and fluff. They really put in a lot of opinion.
Each day there is solid coverage of the local teams with opinions. Game day previews of Argos and Tiger Cat games on the days they start. Good NFL coverage with separate writers once a week for fantasy and a daily summary of what is going on. Both the CFL and NFL have writers also making selections vs. the point spread in games. Even the Blue Jays round up---and honestly have never seen this before----has one of the baseball writers provide an opinion on how many games the Jays will win in the series coming up when he previews the series. Even for NCAA on Saturday there is a guy with his best bets and a little summary for that. That is unusual for Canada since they are also covering the Canadian college football to some degree. This week there was even a 2 page write up and preview of the OHL (Ontario Hockey League). Once again, even in Canada that is unusual for that level of detail.
All of the usual summaries are there for games and standings. At least a few times per week there is a guy going into pretty decent detail on NASCAR. The golf coverage comes up a few times per week although no selections. I've seen a guy covering cricket as there is a big thing going on in that right now. The NHL lockout coverage probably better than most. The MMA is here this week and I know nothing. Surprised no picks yet but I'll look tomorrow but they've had a few pages for that each day.
I also have enjoyed some history columns the past month as they wrote about Ty Cobb getting his last hit at Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto. How did it happen? Apparently the Philadelphia A's had exhibition games even in the middle of a pennant race so came up to Toronto to play near the end of the year to play one. They've also had some enjoyable writing of the 40th anniversary of the Soviet/Canada summit series. Of course, this is the greatest sporting event that pretty well ever took place but doesn't mean much in the U.S. but it was just a huge, huge deal at the time and they've covered it. I doubt that is covered much anywhere else.
There is a pretty good handicapper I think and is a very big contrarian with unique picks on games in the paper. I think he's done all right over the years I would say a winning record. He's helped me out so far this year just with the Bills as he came in on the Jets in their 1st game and also made them his survivor pool pick. Gutsy and a great pick! I did lose on the Bills in week 1 though. LW he came in on the Bills and I did almost eliminate all of my Chiefs bet and he won his survivor bet although I already forgot who he picked. He best bet Miami last week so I had to add a little extra to a bet I made on them.
He is 4-1-1 on his best bets so far this year and 17-13-2. For those of you without a Sun, I'll provide his best bets:
He is on the Browns, Jags, Broncos and Raiders. His survivor pick this week is Chicago.
Also be interested in any other sports sections anybody thinks are anything better than the rest.
