Average NFL OU line by season 1989 - 2009 These data were taken from the data at sportsdatabase.com using the SDQL query language. 2009 - 42.9 2008 - 42.5 2007 - 41.8 2006 - 40.7 2005 - 41.0 2004 - 41.9 2003 - 41.0 2002 - 41.6 2001 - 39.9 2000 - 41.4 1999 - 40.0 1998 - 40.8 1997 - 40.8 1996 - 40.4 1995 - 40.6 1994 - 39.2 1993 - 36.9 1992 - 37.5 1991 - 37.8 1990 - 40.0 1989 - 41.1 Perhaps the changes in the rules is the reason for the recent upsurge in average OU line -- or is it merely the style of play? Al Gore might call it a result of global warming. Finally, I agree that the median would be a more relevant stat, but not different enough to motivate me to find it. My guess is that the median would be slightly lower than the average. Prof Meyer
I actually Think average o/u Lines are a quite good indicator for median scores. I Think average NFL scores are slightly higher than O/U Lines, as 100 point shootouts happen more often than 6-3 games. A couple of years ago average score was around 43 whole median score was 41 (if i rember it correct). I havent looked into it lately though, but Think both have raised a bit due to rule changes giving way for more passing.
