Right...
I'll be honest. I'm sick of "sportsmanship." UCLA called a timeout because they could get the ball back and go on to win in miracle fashion. That's fine. But when you make a decision like that, you must be prepared to face the consequences. USC buries the game on the next play. How can you wrong a coach for winning the game? This links to seeing the media question a coach (and even a high school coach losing his job!!) over blowing a team out. What are you supposed to do when your team is crushing the other with your worst lineup in the game? You play to win the game. Period.
and the best way to win the game would have been to get it over with -- RUN THE BALL. Just watch the celebration by Carroll -- clearly this was personal.

Yes
You think running the ball is more effective than going up 3 TDs with under a minute left?
either outcome is a sure winner for Petey. Answer this -- how many times have you seen a coach pull this type of maneuver?? What if the long range pass was intercepted and returned for a TD?? Then, UCLA gains possesion of the onside kick with 50 seconds left?? Even with the timeouts being burned and SC being forced to punt, UCLA would have gotten the ball with less time left and still 2 TD's to tie. I know that 21 points ahead LOOKS better on the score board, but in reality, what gave Petey's team the best chance of winning straight up?? Clearly, any scenario was +EV at that point in the game, but running the clock was the most +EV no matter how you look at it. As with any coaching decision, the filter needs to be... "what would I NOT want the other coach to do???" The answer then becomes very clear!!
I turned it off before all this happened. Arghhh!!!
Belichick did it to Ryan last week with a Brady pass to Moss (incomplete) with about 30 seconds left as NE was running out the clock. The chances of them losing because they do anything other than kneel down on the ball are slim to none. I didn't see the play and I'm not saying it's ok to throw like they did but if they took a knee the play before, I think it's kind of bush league to call a time out as well. USC is willing to end the game and UCLA is saying it's not over yet. So, USC says we'll put a final nail in the coffin if you want to keep playing.
