Week 1 NFL Sunday Inside the Numbers

Week 1 NFL Sunday Inside the Numbers Miami-Atlanta Nether team really got run game going (Mia 22-96; Atl 27-68, really impressive by Mia defense). Miami -4 TO (Fasano 2 Fum, Pennington 1 Fum, 1INT) Jason Elam 2-4 FG, 1-2 PAT (not good to have kicking issues this early). Gonzalez will be used a lot in the Atl offense (5 rec, 73 yds TD). Ryan solid (22-36 229 2 TD) KC-Baltimore Still pissed about this loss. Stats say Balty dominated. Circumstances showed otherwise considering game was tied with just north of 2:00 left. Balty 32-11 1st D, 40-20 time of poss, 501-188 total yds Balty 41-198 rushing, KC 17-29 KC Off Line stinks. Flacco will fling it on bad teams. they go more conservative on good teams. KC Blkd punt TD and long INT return set up another TD. Croyle was better in 2nd H. Philly-Carolina Carolina 3/16 3rd Down. Carolina held Philly to only 267 total yds. Defense got put in bad spots the whole game. Philly 32-185 rushing. Reid is pass-happy, but he relied on the run more. Interesting to see if Philly offense becomes more balanced. Delhomme 7/17 73 yds 4 INT, 1 Fum. Delhomme pulled. Josh McCown came in and got hurt. Matt Moore 6/11 63 yds 1 INT finished the game. Moore threw ton of INTs at Oregon St. We usually overreact to Week 1 results, but Carolina has real problems at QB. McNabb rib injury mid 3rd. Kolb finished game. Vick can't play until Wk 3. DeSean Jackson 85 yd Punt Ret TD for Philly. Philly Defense 5 Sacks Denver-Cincy Cincy 16-10 1st D, 307-302 edge (87 of those were on the Orton to Stokley tipped ball) so good effort by Cincy defense and it is improved (still think GB torches them next week) Bad snap by Brad St Louis cost Cincy 3 points in the 4th. Palmer 2 INT Orton ZERO turnovers Brian Dawkins still has some gas in the tank w/ 11 tackles Nice debut for Maulauga (8 tackles). Moreno/Buckhalter still splitting carries in Denver. Roy Williams lost Cincy the game by leaving Stokley on that play and going for the hit on Marshall. Minny-Cleveland Brett Favre can sure be successful when he has Adrian Peterson (25-180-3) to carry him. Favre avgd only 3.3 yds per pass play. Berrian DNP and had a neg effect on the pass game. Harvin TD in Rookie debut. Quinn 2 TOs and sacked 5 times. NY Jets-Houston Total domination by NYJ (462-183 tot yds, 39-21 time of poss) Great performance by Jets OL. 42-190 Rushing and gave up zero sacks Sanchez about as good as you can be as a rookie making first road start. 18/31 272 TD,INT. Jets 10/18 3rd Down. Texans secondary is weak. Dunta Robinson is still holding out b/c he got franchise tagged. JVille-Indy Colts 21-12 1st D, 365-228 tot yds Colts 8/14 3rd D Indy defense was great. Held MJD under 100 yds. Colts concerns though is still the run game. 31 rush/71 yds. went for it on 4th down late in the game to get 1st D and run out clock. 4th and 1 and they don't get it. That's what cost them the playoff at SD LY as well. Indy -2 TO A Gonzalez out a few weeks with injury. Colts not deep at WR and have a rookie 4th rounder and an undrafted 3-yr vet as their starters now with Reggie Wayne. Detroit-NO NO 36.5-23.5 time of poss, 515-231 yds edge, 28-14 1st D NO 9/13 3rd D NO 35/157 Rushing, Detroit 20/33 Brees 26/34 358 6 TD INT Stafford 16/37 205 yds 3 INT, rush TD Darren Sharper 2 INT for NO Pierre Thomas DNP. Mike Bell bulk of carries. Reggie Bush is now the 3rd-string RB. Lions good return avgs. Northcutt 27.5 on PR and Aaron Brown 36 ypr on KOs. Might be something to keep in mind for future overs. Dallas-Tampa zero TOs in game. Dallas gave up 450 yds to Tampa offense (they ran 21 more plays than Dallas, but that's still a lot). TB 31/174 Rushing. Cadillac looked good. Doesn't have quite the breakaway speed he used to have (after 2 knee surgeries who would) but he can still be effective. Dallas run game not used as much today. Romo 16/27 353 yds 3 TD (42, 66,80) Dallas offense is better without TO clearly. It could really be explosive if Barber and Jones get going. SFO-Arizona Ariz 299-203 yd edge Neither team could run at all. Arizona ran it better in 2nd when Beanie Wells got some carries. I think he will get more work as season goes on. SF defense did a great job covering down the field. Warner had to throw checkdowns to RB Hightower to move the chains. Hightower had 12 catches, 121 yds out of the backfield. Warner 2 INT and sacked 3 times. Arizona was terrible on the OL all day. SF front four won them this game period. They were stunting all over the place and Ariz couldn't react. The Cards REALLY miss Todd Haley as their OC. Patrick Willis 13 tackles and an INT. He's the best defender in the NFL that no one talks about. NYG-Washington Not much too this game. I'm not a huge backer of Jason Campbell, but they have got to open up the offense and let him take shots. He needs to make plays with his feet as well. His one run was for 18 yds on the scoring drive that got the backdoor. Giants 36-24 TOP Giants defense still looks tough under new DC. Umenyiora strip, scoop and score. St. Louis-Seattle Game turned ugly after a play in late 2nd Qtr. Seattle up 7-0 and kicking FG to go up 10-0, Rams block FG and return for TD. Could've changed the entire game. But STL had 12 men on the field. Seattle then scores TD near end of half. Sea -2 TO margin and Rams still couldn't score. Sea 26-13 1st D, 8/15 3rd D, 446-247 yds. Sea 34/167 Rush (Julius Jones 19-117-1, Edge James also had 11 carries). Sea pass game is good with healthy WRs. If run game can regularly produce, they could be a surprise. STL offense never in rhythm. 10 pens for 85 yds. Only watched a bit of this game and I saw Richie Incognito (Rams OG) get called for 2 personal fouls alone in the few minutes I watched. Only bright spot for Rams was the rookie debut of James Laurinaitis. 14 tackles and fumble rec. Why he slipped down the draft board that much, I don't know. Chicago-GB As pissed as I was at the KC, I was jumping for joy at the lucky cover here. Chi controlled the game (18-12 1st D, 352-226 yds edge). Cutler 17/36 277 1 TD 4 INT. Bears need help at WR BADLY. I forget the name of the Packers Right Tackle, but he got owned and burned for all 4 sacks of Rodgers.
good thread. Thanks for some good info. I am playing stuff like Carolina +7 this week. Way too much being made of these two teams. Always a fine line between between figuring out overreactions to week 1 and who actually maybe different this year.
Brian Urlacher now OUT for the season. Dislocated right wrist.
Just a nugget.. Dunta Robinson did start (holdout is over). Texans defense, just sucked as usual.
Just a nugget.. Dunta Robinson did start (holdout is over). Texans defense, just sucked as usual.
Thanks for the correction Twoniner. I read that he was holding out as of a week or so ago. Texans defense is bad which is surprising b/cthey have some talented players (Mario Williams, Brian Cushing, DeMeco Ryans, etc). Their secondary is really week even with Robinson.
Carolina and Houston continued their horrible preseason play. very hard for me to back them, unless I see much bigger numbers. Denver, Cincinnati, and St Louis all looked bad. I could not believe Cutler! He often just threw DIRECTLY to GB players, with no Chicago player in sight. Now, without Urlachler, who wants to bet Chicago? Pitsburg only 2 1/2 point favorite as of now.
Tennessee-Pittsburgh Defense, Defense, Defense. Pitt held to 23 rushes, 36 yds. Pitt 0-2 Red Zone, Tenn 1-3 Big Ben 33/43 363 td, 2 INT Holmes 9/131/1 Ward big fumble late in game. Polamalu injured in 1st H. Collins 22/35 244 TD, INT Bironas Missed 2 FGs (37) (31) Tenn Rushing 25/86 Pitt wins coin toss, kicks winning FG. Still hate the NFL OT rule. Do it like Canada and give each time 1 drive. Buffalo-NE NE dominated stats, Buffalo gave the game away. McKelvin's decision to bring out KO essentially lost them the game. NE 28 to 17 1st D NE 10/16 3rd Down 37-23 Time of Poss 441-276 yd edge Buffalo effective in rushing when they had the ball (19/90) NE not very effective (23/73) Buffalo allowed 4 sacks (mostly in second half, Tully Banta-Cain had two on the final drive), but their young OL actually held up well for the most part. Lynch DNP. Fred Jackson 15/57 Rush; 5 rec/83 yds/TD Brady 39/53 378 2 TD, INT NE threw a lot of short passes and didn't really go vertical or deep too often. Moss 12/141; Welker 12/93; Watson 6/77/2TD; Faulk 6/51 (huge on 3rd down as usual).
Great stuff shooter. Thanks for sharing.

Polomalu being out will be huge for Cutler's rebound. Love the way the Bears defense played, even after losing Urlacher. Heartbreaking divisional road loss for Bears. Pitt riding in high off their big primetime win. Liking the situation as it sets up for the Bears quite a bit.
San Diego-Oakland Oak 366-317 yd edge Oak 7/14 3rd D; 1-1 4th D (what was the go-ahead TD) SD 23/77 Rush; Oak 32/148 Rush SD 3/4 Red Zone; Oak 1/3 (good teams score in red zone, bad teams don't) Tomlinson DNP in 2nd H Chargers won by Raiders dropping LB's waaay back in coverage. Sproles found the holes and ate them up on short passes. Russell 12/30 208 TD, 2 INT Murphy (4th Rd) greatly outperformed 1st-rounder Heyward-Bey. Zach Miller 6 rec/96 yds Michael Huff INT, Fumble Rec May have been a bad trade long-term but Richard Seymour paid immediate dividends (6 Tackles, 2 Sacks). Oakland OL and DL dominated the game. Sproles 5 KO Ret for 170 yds. That was huge. Much like Buffalo, Raiders gave away the game and they dominated the game completely and still lost.
