Why Jim Harbaugh is one of the best coaches...

Why Jim Harbaugh is one of the best coaches... This is a very subtle yet important point. Stanford leading by 4 and only picking up one yard on 2nd and 10 lets the clock run all the way down to 1:06 from 1:44 and realizes if they don't convert the first down, they can punt the ball to Va. Tech where the Hokies will get the ball potentially inside their 20 with less than 50 seconds left in the half and be forced to keep conservative and not score...It is astounding how many coaches don't understand basic game management strategy...
And Virginia Tech takes the ball and drives down the field. Instead of having 35-40 seconds left on the clock, they only have 8 and settle for a FG from the 20 yard line instead of having time to go for the end zone...It amazes me how few coaches actually understand good clock management skills...

I'm guessing the vast majority would have let the clock run down... I didn't see anything there that shouted "wow, he's a great coach"...

Did anyone see the idiot Giants yesterday? Redskins on their 5 yard line with about 1:45 left. Giants don't use any of their three timeouts. If I owned the team, he's fired on the spot. If I owned a team, coaches would be immediately fired for poor clock management. Players would be immediately cut for scoring a TD and doing anything but handing the ball to the referee. Celebrate, good - bye.

I think they did but not sure....yes I would bleed the clock on 1st down and see what I got on a run...and yes this may be colored by the fact I had 2x stanford 1st half -2.5 as i did game -3 (in the interest of full disclosure)
"Judging by the way it played out"? Luck has had a great night. You can't pick and choose when your QB will play well. The bottom line is Luck is the highest rated QB in the draft and you have great field position. If you are going to make the argument with the benefit of hindsight then you are a results-oriented handicapper. I'm a process-oriented handicapper. You have to let your QB run your two-minute offense but when there is a chance that you may not convert a 3rd and long, which is what that was, then you have to become more judicious in your use of the clock so as to not turn it over to the opposition...and that's exactly what he did...

Luck had 1 int, 1 TD and 130 yds passing in the first half...That's a solid night. You can run on back to back plays if there is 3:40 left in the half, not 1:40 left in the half. He also had some nice offensive momentum when he passed on first down. Stanfords whole game is about balance and my posts came through out the 2nd half. If Stanford had lost the game I would still be saying it's the right move the way Harbaugh managed the game there and called the plays...
