You're fired!!!
According to Easterbrook on espn.com, Washington did the same thing against Denver earlier this year (lined up, timeout was called - they still ran the same fake out of the timeout) AND IT WORKED. Super reverse psychology or something. This time around everyone had seen the tape, plus the guy was super pressured (since they had seen it already) and didn't execute.
They did execute that play against Denver, and I only saw the highlights so don't know for sure, but I didn't think Denver defensed it like that. They ultimately had one on one coverage in that Denver game I believe. Could be wrong on that because I only saw the highlights. Actually, probably one on nobody because I think he was wide open.
They were down 24-0. Could anything they tried that adding fluctation really have been that bad? They basically had no chance to win either way. Some of you guys are very fickle when it comes to these coaches. They get too conservative (punt on 4th and short) you bash em, take some chances (NE going for it, PIT onside kick, this play) and then you bash em when it doesn't work.
I thougth this play might have worked if they threw a screen to a really fast guy and had a all the other guys on that side of the field blocking the whole way to the endzone. Probably not a good play call (especially in light of the timeout), but could be a case of poor execution. I'll have to look at the Denver play.
People keep mentioning Zorn, I thought he was relieved of his playcalling duties weeks ago. Does he still make the calls for special teams?
People keep mentioning Zorn, I thought he was relieved of his playcalling duties weeks ago. Does he still make the calls for special teams?
That's an excellent point. But, ultimately, it falls on the head coach to overrule stupid/bad play calls made by the assistants, coordinators, etc. I suppose Zorn could try saying he didn't know Sherm Lewis was going to run the same play again, but that's even worse! PS I don't take credit for this counter-point - I heard it made numerous times over the past week on the radio/television.
