Suggestions

Add the plug-in (it is free I think) for this software that allows embedding from social media like You Tube, Twitter and so on.  That way people could post video trip reports and their pictures directly from social media. It will also quickly bring the forum into the modern age by quickly allowing the addition of multimedia content.

Also, A text link to the login link at the top of the forum would be helpful. That way people wouldn’t have to bounce to the front of the site to login. It should be simple to add it to the forum header.

Overall, it looks great and I’d say a 100% improvement.

Is there a way to see todays posts? Or posts since last visit? Either would be helpful once traffic picksup.

I think most recent on top is a great plan. 

Most forum layouts are easiest to navigate having most recent at the top. Great idea.
