We left NW Indiana on August 1 and headed to Metropolis, IL for our first visit ever. If that were the last casino on earth I wouldn't be a gambler. First, they have the worst payback percentage in the state at 89%. Secondly, the Diamond Lounge served chips (that's it) and served drinks in paper/plastic cups. Yuck! (And this is the Code Green initiative??) Third, even though the website listed the steakhouse open daily, it was closed on Wednesday. Tech people need to get their acts together. It cost both of us $90 to get the 25 needed points.
Thursday we drove to Tunica to stay at the Horseshoe. We arrived in the early afternoon and was told there were no premium rooms available (my husband is diamond). We got a room overlooking the airconditioning units on the second floor. We decided to do the Great Race points at the Roadhouse across the driveway. It cost each of us about $10 to get the points. For you video poker fans, they had a bunch of 9/6 JOB, even at the quarter level. Nickels were 8/5. Our money lasted a looooong time in Tunica.
We ate at the Paula Deen buffet at Harrah's, and I thought it was much better than the PD buffet at southern Indiana. We couldn't pass up the sweet tea, and at dinner they serve it with a spring of mint. Nice touch. We visited the DL, complete with a pool table. Food choices were slim and the serving area wasn't too big. I really didn't take a good look since we had just finished eating.
We headed back to Horseshoe and visited the DL there. By far and away, they had the best selection of food, including fresh fruit and make your own sandwiches with all the condiments.
We stayed another night and Saturday we headed to St. Louis.
However, we did have to stop at Laqmbert's, the Home of the Throwed Rolls, in Sikeston, MO. Where else can you get a chicken LEG dinner? The Roll guys really chuck them and my husband made a fine grab from across the room (5 claps).
We like St. Louis and are sorry tohear that it has been sold. The DL charges a nominal fee ($1 for beer, $2 for mixed drinks) that is very reasonable compared to our home casino Hammond Horseshoe.
Sunday we headed to Kansas City. We drove directly to Jack Stack barbecue and had an awesome dinner. I had burnt ends and my husband had the baby back ribs. The sides were awesome, too. Apparently cheesy potato casserole in a KC thing and the barbecue pit beans were probably the best I've had.
We drove to the casino and finally got a really great room--a junior suite. We headed to the casino, and it cost both of us combined about $10 to get our points. My money lasted a long time here as well. I think that this was my favorite casino of the trip. The DL was very nice and Sunday they had pulled pork, vegies, dips, etc. They also charge a reasonable amount to drinks. We stayed there two nights.
Monday we are at Smokin' Guns Barbecue, a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives place. It was also very good, but Jack Stack was better (should be for the price).
Monday we drove back to St. Louis. We were supposed to stay for two nights, but after a week of living out of a suitcse, we decided to head home after just one night. We did the tour at Anheuser-Busch and was happy to find another beer I like that I can actually get in the greater Chicago area--Shock Top Raspberry Wheat. (My absulute fave is Yuengling)
All in all, we had a very enjoyable time, minus Metropolis. Yes, the employees are all very gracious, but it is not enough to out shine the negatives. We also returned to HIGH gas prices. I did love 3.39 in MS and MO.
