2012 Great Race Completed!

We left NW Indiana on August 1 and headed to Metropolis, IL for our first visit ever. If that were the last casino on earth I wouldn't be a gambler. First, they have the worst payback percentage in the state at 89%. Secondly, the Diamond Lounge served chips (that's it) and served drinks in paper/plastic cups. Yuck! (And this is the Code Green initiative??) Third, even though the website listed the steakhouse open daily, it was closed on Wednesday. Tech people need to get their acts together. It cost both of us $90 to get the 25 needed points.

Thursday we drove to Tunica to stay at the Horseshoe. We arrived in the early afternoon and was told there were no premium rooms available (my husband is diamond). We got a room overlooking the airconditioning units on the second floor. We decided to do the Great Race points at the Roadhouse across the driveway. It cost each of us about $10 to get the points. For you video poker fans, they had a bunch of 9/6 JOB, even at the quarter level. Nickels were 8/5. Our money lasted a looooong time in Tunica.

We ate at the Paula Deen buffet at Harrah's, and I thought it was much better than the PD buffet at southern Indiana. We couldn't pass up the sweet tea, and at dinner they serve it with a spring of mint. Nice touch. We visited the DL, complete with a pool table. Food choices were slim and the serving area wasn't too big. I really didn't take a good look since we had just finished eating.

We headed back to Horseshoe and visited the DL there. By far and away, they had the best selection of food, including fresh fruit and make your own sandwiches with all the condiments.

We stayed another night and Saturday we headed to St. Louis.

However, we did have to stop at Laqmbert's, the Home of the Throwed Rolls, in Sikeston, MO. Where else can you get a chicken LEG dinner? The Roll guys really chuck them and my husband made a fine grab from across the room (5 claps).

We like St. Louis and are sorry tohear that it has been sold. The DL charges a nominal fee ($1 for beer, $2 for mixed drinks) that is very reasonable compared to our home casino Hammond Horseshoe.

Sunday we headed to Kansas City. We drove directly to Jack Stack barbecue and had an awesome dinner. I had burnt ends and my husband had the baby back ribs. The sides were awesome, too. Apparently cheesy potato casserole in a KC thing and the barbecue pit beans were probably the best I've had.

We drove to the casino and finally got a really great room--a junior suite. We headed to the casino, and it cost both of us combined about $10 to get our points. My money lasted a long time here as well. I think that this was my favorite casino of the trip. The DL was very nice and Sunday they had pulled pork, vegies, dips, etc. They also charge a reasonable amount to drinks. We stayed there two nights.

Monday we are at Smokin' Guns Barbecue, a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives place. It was also very good, but Jack Stack was better (should be for the price).

Monday we drove back to St. Louis. We were supposed to stay for two nights, but after a week of living out of a suitcse, we decided to head home after just one night. We did the tour at Anheuser-Busch and was happy to find another beer I like that I can actually get in the greater Chicago area--Shock Top Raspberry Wheat. (My absulute fave is Yuengling)

All in all, we had a very enjoyable time, minus Metropolis. Yes, the employees are all very gracious, but it is not enough to out shine the negatives. We also returned to HIGH gas prices. I did love 3.39 in MS and MO.

Great job!! I think you may be the first on here to "complete"?

I already did Joliet, am heading to Vegas next week, and then I will be making a mid-week trip to Tunica in Sept. to stay at the Horseshoe. You've got me excited about going to Tunica now! I'll definitely play at the Roadhouse as you suggested.

My friend is going to take my card with her to swipe at AC/Philly/St.Louis/Southern IN. She was going to go to Metropolis too but I'll tell her what you said and maybe she'll take a pass (she doesn't need the extra points).
jen--If your friend doesn't need the points, She shouldn't bother. We planned our trip so that on most days we drove about 5 hours. Longest day was the first.

I had to show my ID in St. Louis, by the way.

Your are definitely right about Metropolis. I decided to stop there on my way to Tunica. DL had NOTHING to eat during midweek (not even chips) and as I recall casino didn't open until around 9 AM the next morning. Have 9 points so far. We are heading to Joliet, Southern Indiana and St Louis next week and then will finish our Great Race with Vegas next month.

I should have added that we already completed three more stops prior to this road trip. We visited Vegas, Horseshoe Southern Indiana, and Hammond Horseshoe giving us each a total of 15 points.

If you (or anyone else for that matter) is planning on staying in South Indiana (outside of Louisville) on a Monday or Tuesday night, I have a deal for you.

I have a certificate good for one free night stay (Mon or Tues only). Good until 9-25-12. I won it at a contest in the hotel and it is completely transferable. I will let anyone have it for free, as I hate to see it go to waste.

Let me know if interested.

Thanks for the offer Dave, but for soem reason they already comped us. Hmmm is that an idication of ????. Hope it's not like metropolis. What is the D Lounge like?
Diamond lounge in S. Indiana has happy hour on Tues. & Thurs. at which time they have free drinks. It is very crowded then, and it is fun to watch as people really drink a lot and carry drinks out with them. One thing we discovered our last trip is that they will give you a stamp to return anytime during the 2 hours 7:00-9:00 for the free drinks. Otherwise, the drinks are normal prices. They usually have some decent food there during certain hours, and usually some sweets later in the evening.
They also serve a pretty good buffet at 6 PM as I recall. Carved Roast Beef, salad item, veggies, and fries, certainly enough for a light dinner. I was there on a Tues and again on Thurs, so I do not know if they have the buffet every day. Get there early on Tues and Thurs as folks are lined up and tables fill up fast.

I agree about the Metropolis comments. We are going on a Metropolis, Tunica Horseshoe, Horseshoe Southern Indiana swing the week of Aug 27th. We are paying $59 at the Met but getting comped in Tunica and Southern Indiana. That makes little sense as we previously stayed at the Met (comped) on a return trip from NOLA and in regard to games especially video poker it is one of the worst casino layouts I have ever seen. The employees are great and the buffet is excellent but after all it is a casino and that is the only bad part of the Met. We previously earned 2 in cleveland and 2 in Hammond so this trip will get us each to 11. We are going to Reno/Lake Tahoe in Sep but the one credit there will be useless. I wanted to layover in Vegas when flying home to Indy from Reno so as to be able to cab to Ballys, earn 25 Tier credits, and cab back to the airport. The layover was 4 hours but the wife said "no" so I guess we will each have to settle for 50,000 credits each.
