Caesars Pulls an MGM

All great comments on what WAS Vegas and what IS Vegas.  A lot has changed since my first visit in 1997.  I've been there around 10x and will return in 6 weeks. This is likely my last for awhile since I've got 3 other trips planned after this. LV is going after the younger people who never experienced the free offer at the table and STRONG drinks on demand.  All of us are the dinosaurs.  I doubt they "mine out" the younger crowd like Tunica, MS and the tribal casinos in OK have.  Those places are virtual ghost towns even on the weekends.  I'm not a big player but know bad BJ rules, bad VP pay tables and sucker side bets.  I'll spend a day on my trip going to the local places to play 3/2 BJ and craps.  The rest of the trip will be enjoying the sites.  I will be taking advantage of the LVA 2/1's and MP.  Fewer people are grinding out 8 hours of play to maximize comps and 100% EV.  If that's your fun in Vegas, more power to you.

Try comparing a 3-5 day trip to Vegas against a flight to FL, Mexico or anywhere else with sand and water, versus a discounted flight to Vegas.  It's still a bargain vacation.

Now let's hope that monkey pox doesn't shut everything down, again.

Sure. But the public's passive acceptance of everything having gotten much worse and much more expensive is to blame. A Vegas trip has increased in cost by 300% in the last five years. That's not true of any other popular vacation destination. And yes, that could be because those places never were bargains, and Vegas was. If the cost of, say, a trip to Hawaii had tripled in that same time frame, I'd expect a drop in visitation.

But I agree that anyone can blow as much money as they wish. Yes, that ultimately hurts the rest of us, but c'est la vie.

"A Vegas trip has increased in cost by 300% in the last five years." - Please show the source(s) for these numbers. Thank you.

I took the family to Disney in 06.  Check todays prices.

We do like to "property-hop", and therefore are the smallest of fish since we don't concentrate our play.  When we go, we may stay a couple of nights at Red Rock, a couple of nights at Green Valley, and then 4-5 nghts at an MGM property which lately has been Bellagio because they actually gave us decent rates.  While there, we will hit 25+ different properties in Vegas, North Vegas, and Henderson.  But right now, we aren't planning a trip this year because MGM room rates are crazy and Southwest fares are equally as bad as room rates.  If rates and flights come down, we may plan a last minute trip, but right now I have a sour taste in my mouth.  They all want the bigger fish, not the hoppers like us.

I do not know where you would be flying from, but Southwest currently has $99 airfares from Houston, for the months of September,October and the first half of November, which are the cheapest rates I have seen from them in many months.

David, we're coming from Nashville.  I prefer Southwest because they fly a couple of non-stop flights daily but their non-stops are often their most expensive flights for us.

I also prefer non stops but my last trip I took a one stop flight to Vegas because it was cheaper and earlier in the day - and it only added an hour to my flight time. Something you may want to consider.
