Companion rates/checking for companion at check in

I always book comp'd rooms with my wife as my companion. Stayed dozens of times at Caesars Palace, Paris and Harrah's Tunica. I have always checked in by myself and have never been hasseled. YMMV.
I accidentally made a reservation at Harrah's Cherokee with my husband's companion number on the reservation and the clerk wouldn't let me check in (I was taking a solo trip). It was a 20-minute ordeal where she had to cancel the reservation I made with his number -- even though it was my offer -- then rebook a reservation for me only using my number.
It was still comped as it should have been (he only plays poker, so he's relatively useless, anyway!), but it was kind of an unnecessary annoyance. She had my list of offers in front of her on the screen and could clearly see that I had a ton of them, so...why not just let it go?

I thought I would provide an update to this comment I made previously. I have stayed two times at Caesars Palace this year on comp'd rooms with my wife as my companion - BOTH TIMES she was required to show her ID at check-in. It appears they are becoming more strict. FWIW
