Cromwell 5/18-20 with a little Rio thrown in

It was very nice having all the Cromwell staff looking after my every want. I had an invited offer during the soft opening ($89/night for "strip view").

We drove in from Los Angeles very smooth uneventful trip. Dropped off hubby & son at Rio where they were staying for their slot tournament. Entrance to Cromwell off Flamingo coming from the strip is the first left turn past the signal light mid-block between Ballys & Cromwell. Once you turn into driveway you turn left to get to valet and self-parking. I didn't like having delivery trucks you have to drive past from the driveway entrance almost all the way to valet.

Valet is easy from then on, but it also wasn't busy when we stayed. Bellhop gets your luggage and goes with you to check-in. Check-in is right after you get into the building. Mike our bellhop said he'd worked at Bill's and Barbary coast for 26 years(had 14 months off during Cromwell construction). Once you're checked-in bellhop gives you a guided tour as you go to the elevators which are not quite mid way to front of Cromwell. There was always security person at elevators. Only 8 floors in hotel, and they were still completing the 8th floor we were told. There was coffee and hot water for tea outside elevator on our floor. I bought some hot chocolate packets at a cvs and was tempted to put a few out with the tea packets. I asked about a fridge and was told the fridge in the room is not pressure sensitive although it is fully stocked with waters, sodas, wine, champagne, beer etc. There is a price list for these items along with the snacks and discreet items in a drawer. So I was told we could use the fridge for our items, but there isn't much room left for the guest's items.

We received a nice gift basket of crackers, nuts, salami, piickles, jam and a bucket with champagne. Unfortunately it wasn't delivered right away, and we left the room after about a 1/2 hour to go over to LVH so I could check-in to my comped room there and play my free play. We ate and had drinks at LVH so we weren't in a champagne drinking mood when we returned to Cromwell.

We were told in the late afternoon for hotel guests there was a wine and snack time in the Interlude lounge. There was also a breakfast for hotel guests in the morning in the Interlude. The breakfast had an omelet station, bacon, potatoes, danish, breads, fruit, and yogurt. There were servers to get you juices, teas, coffee, & water and to clear away dishes. This was really nice, but I was told once the room service kitchen was fully ready this would be discontinued. We didn't go for the afternoon wine and I don't know if this is being continued or not.

The room #550 faced Bally's but I could see the strip(Bellagio) from the window. The weather was a bit breezy and that small window in the bathroom was nice to let in some outside air. The room at 360 sq ft is a bit small after we'd seen the Diamond rooms at Rio my hubby & son received. When the light is on in the bathroom and off in the room it is easy to see into the shower through the mirror. Also the shower is a little tricky as I'm sure most people like me got a cold overhead spritz until I figured out how to turn on the wall shower nozzle instead of the overhead.

Casino

First there is only a men's and a women's bathroom in the casino. One of each, located near the elevators. Most of the vp machines are located in the end of the casino near valet. Slots are located in the front of the casino near the Flamingo/strip corner entrance with a few across the front. There are tables, but since I don't play I didn't pay attention. There are several bars in the casino. While playing, drink orders are taken by order taking staff who enter your order into a tablet or ipad device and your drink is delivered by a server in 5 to 7 minutes. II imagine wait times for drinks will be longer when they are busy.

We had a good time and the service level is terrific. They don't have ice machines on the floors so you have to call and have ice delivered to your room. I'd prefer to get my own.

Would I stay again? Probably not, with Drai's there, it's set up to attract the young hip crowd, not us long time CET players.

The pool wasn't open yet, but I was told hotel guests had access to the pool during the day. I've read some reports on yelp where even hotel guests had to pay the day admission fee to use the pool.

I commented to several levels of staff that I didn't feel once Drai's day beach and Drai's night pool club was open I wasn't the target demographic. I was told by all that wasn't the case. After seeing a few pics of the crowd at the pool, I know I'm not who they want to stay at the Cromwell. Plus at a high end hotel which claims they are there to provide great service to it's guests how can they want to charge you to use the pool?

My only comment about the Rio was that my hubby & son(platinum level) were both "upgraded" to the Diamond players rooms in the Ipenema tower. While in need of some freshening up, these rooms were large and wonderful. Plus they had a great view of the pools and the zipline.

Thanks so much for these details about the Cromwell. I was curious and we did get an offer. But, alas, I'm sure we are not in the hip crowd either. When we stayed there years ago when it was Barbary Coast, I didn't like the tiny bathroom. If they had enlarged those I would be tempted to stay.
You've made some great observations about the Cromwell. I had not plans to stay there, and I'm sure I am sure that will continue to be the case...they'd have to comp the room.

I certainly don't like the ice delivered by staff...a tip necessity. I'm surprised the mini-bars are still in vogue as many places have discintued as they're simply not worth the hassle.

LVA reports the majority of Blackjack table are 6/5 and I suppose the penny games are as penny games are. Drai's was for years THE place to be and the first of the ultra-lounges; however, now that every hotel on the Strip has its own ultra-lounge, I highly doubt Drai's is going to sustain great business after the newness wears off.

Thanks for the report!
I appreciate all the info, especially about the rooms, I think I will probably pass on staying there in the future. They sound a bit too small for me, I do like a bit of a bigger room and for some reason I'm partial to staying at Paris.

My girlfriend said the casino was nice, but kind of small. She felt they were trying to be like Cosmo, but on a cheaper scale (?).

I agree with John, I don't like the lack of ice machine, or for that matter that the bell man takes your bags to check in, both necessitate tipping. I know some people may like the service, but I just think of it as another person with their hand out.

I'm not part of that young/hip crowd either, that's why I was never in love with Cosmo, so will probably wander through on my next visit just to check it out, but not stay or play there.

I'm guessing Giada's wasn't open yet? I would like to try her restaurant.

Last thing I heard was Giada's opening was delayed until June 4th. I would like to try it too, but now that the Sterling Brunch is back I'll probably devote any Giada's money to Sterling Brunch.
The bellman just waits with you as you check-in, so there's only 1 tip involved. I'm really curious how that service level is going to be if they are ever fully booked. The casino area was busier Monday night and the drink service wasn't that great, I remember looking around for someone with an order tablet so I could get a drink. Sunday night they were all over the place.
Other than Giada's, there isn't any other restaurants so they seem to be counting on you getting breakfast and any other meals while you're staying there from room service.

If you haven't seen it already here's a Today show link about Giada's opening:
