Resort Fees

The resort fees seem to be getting higher and higher. Are there any resorts that do not charge a resort fee?

All of the Caesars (Harrahs) properties. Cosmopolitan. M, I think.

My favourite topic!!!! I refuse to stay at any hotel that thinks I should pay for the priviledge of using a pool they built, having a coffee maker in the room, work-out facilities etc. Having said that, don't rule those places out, some of them are the better hotels and some of them will remove the resort fees prior to your arrival if you ask. I ask, if they say NO, on to the next hotel. Simple as that.

I wish everyone would just REFUSE to pay these bullcrap charges and tell them they won't book a stay until they do, I know they will never respond but I have sent emails stating that I would LOVE to stay in some of these hotels and will happily drop my money there just as soon as they drop their "resort fee". Ask them to let me know when they do, Haven't received a single reply yet. SCREW-EM!!! In a city (my favourite) with sooooo many options, I just don't need to and WON'T pay that charge!!!!!

In addition, none of the downtown properties have one (except the Gold Spike). Casino Royale, Terrible's, and the Las Vegas Hilton are also doing without, for now.

I don't mind resort fees. They're just part of the room rate, listed seperately so that the hotels can advertise a false low rate.

If the room rate is $50 and the resort fee is $10, just get in the habit of thinking of the room rate as $60.

I'd rather they didn't price it this way, but we see this sort of pricing in lots of things we buy (new cars, airline tickets, cell phones). Might as well get used to it, the US doesn't enforce sensible consumer protection laws, so this sort of deceptive pricing simply is not going away.

If you're paying for a room and you look at it as just part of the price of the room then that's fine -- as long as the hotel really has it out there that you will be charged that extra amount.

However, if a room is comped and then they slap you with a resort fee that's just wrong. Especially when it's not a uniform practice throughout the company and you get surprised by it. Example -- I've stayed at Mirage, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, and Bellagio on comps without being charged a resort fee, but when I stayed at Monte Carlo they charged the resort fee and would NOT back down -- comp or not. I was not told about the resort fee when I booked through a host there. (He no longer worked there by the time I stayed there.)

Maybe they charge everyone for the extra dirty balled-up sock in the bathroom...

South Point does not charge a resort fee.

Unfortunately, resort fees are becoming a way of life. Ever since they started using the "energy surcharg" ( remember that one?), they've been trying to collect money for services you may not use, just to bolster revenues. With this economy they're here to stay. I'm sure all will have some form of one in the near future. Personally, other than the way they handle it, I don't have a big problem with it. Most places I stay don't have one yet, but I'm sure they will soon.

I look at it this way, even with the fees, I'm paying less than 10 years ago. Being a very low roller, I've always paid for rooms. Yeah, I get some decent discounts and for a while Silverton was pretty generous, but I still usually paid. 10 years ago I stayed at Sam's Town and the Orleans for the most part. Even if you tack on another $10 a day, I'm still paying less than I did then.
