Stay at Southpoint?

I will be attending a convention at Mandalay Bay, but need cheaper digs. I am considering SouthPoint because it's cheaper but looks quite nice. ( I have not been there yet).
Usually I stay at Gold Coast which I find very satisfactory. I like walking over to Rio or the Palms if needed for more excitement, and there are good free shuttles to get me around. I won't have a car.
Does the deuce bus go down to Southpoint? Does cabbing it each day to mandalay bay make the stay not worth it?
Any thoughts appreciated. Money is a factor.

I can't answer your questions about the transportation, but have stayed at Southpoint several times and thought it was a good place to stay. If I remember correctly, the rooms and/or bathroom seemed just a little larger than average. Don't know if they still have it, but several years ago they had a shuttle that went as far as the outlet shops--that might lessen your taxi cost if you caught 1 there.
The bus does go to Southpoint but you have to transfer at the bus terminal.
South Point is a great place to stay, but having a rental car makes it easier.

I enjoy the Southpoint, good gaming and rooms. There is a paid shuttle $8 for a roundtrip ticket that stops at the Excaliber, then there is the free tram to Mandalay Bay from there, although it may be just as quick to walk from where the shuttle drops off (at least to the Luxor stop).

The Excaliber is the first drop off stop after leaving South Point and it is the last pick up spot heading pack to South Point so it's fairly quick getting back and forth.

I'm not sure how much a cab would cost. I do know a cab to The M is about $12-15 tip included and that's 3.4 miles with no traffic. Mandalay Bay is 5.94 miles in the other direction with probably a little more traffic.
Could you stay closer to your Convention at MB? How about Luxor, Excal or Trop?

IF you stayed at SP, I would book a rental car,and keep checking back on prices til departure time.
Might cost $25 per day or less. Much cheaper than Taxi. And alot less hassle than busing.

You can always cancel a rental car, Last min. So don't worry about that.
But I wouldn't stay way off strip without one.

Gold Coast is a dump compared with South Point. Big fan of renting a car while in Vegas regardless of where we stay.
Thanks to all for the varied and thoughtful advice. I will be watching the rates at SP.

I have not stayed at SP, no reflection on SP rooms, but do spend time gambling there. I Stay at M/Resort or Silverton instead because of better offers. My point, rent a car if SP is where you decide to stay.
I would not rely on public transportation if stayiing at South Point. You end up scheduling around the pickup times and its a hassle. Definitely need a car.

South Point is nice in almost every respect but you will get bored there very quickly if you are trapped there for more than a day with no rental car.
