Vegas Strip closing to vehicle traffic?

Perhaps this issue has already been discussed in these forums somewhere ( I haven't seen any threads myself..not that I've searched with much vigor) . Immediately following the NFL draft festivities in Vegas, a Vegas city councilman suggested for consideration the permanent closure of Las Vegas Blvd. to vehicle traffic. His suggestion was based on the partial closing of the Strip to traffic during some of the NFL draft events. His anecdotal take was " the toursists loved it!". At the time I sarcastically wished this guy would have left town with Roger Goodell...shame on me. That opinion includes an awareness that the Strip traffic is generally snarled / stalled / morphs into a parking lot depending on time of day. I'm also aware that there's always a few pedestrians every year that pay the full price attempting to navigate a LVB crossing outside the realm of common sense and crosswalk tenets, too.

There has just been a small smattering of this idea being further propagated among social media and Vegas podcasters to my knowledge. I can't see it happening...I'm just not that visionary, I guess.

Closing the Strip to vehicle traffic would choke off a lot of direct and ancillary ( eg transportation) elements that generate revenue for the Strip hotels / casinos and the supportive infrastructure businesses. The overlords won't let it happen, imo...too much dinero to sacrifice. Revenue talks, the rest walks.

Opinions?

Perhaps this would be a good QoD question.

Unfortunately, the Strip serves as the only arterial through that part of town. Savvy locals and visitors know back routes to get around the Strip, but those are narrow streets that can't hold a lot of traffic. If the Strip were closed to vehicular traffic, ALL buses, taxis, trucks, limos, etc. etc. would have no choice but to access the casinos via those back streets. Chaos.

Also, Sahara, Flamingo, Tropicana, etc. carry a huge amount of east-west traffic across the Strip and would have to be closed and traffic rerouted there as well. The DI (Desert Inn) flyover dodges that problem (and is by far the best way to cross that area), but the powers that be have never followed up on that concept.

Elon musk's Loop will conceivably do the very thing you speak of which is create a seemless public transportation corridor that connects the airport, strip, and downtown.     They should have done that with the monorail and have it go down Las Vegas Blvd instead of the back door path it takes now.

Spending enough money would allow for both the public transportation and allowing regular traffic on LVBlvd.   The stadiums are going to make driving an interesting experience with the current setup.

I hope that Musk's tunnel system is everything that he says that it will be.  Airport to downtown, for example, in something like 11 minutes for $7.  And that $7 is for 4 passengers.  If this system can really move volume, it'll largely solve the Strip traffic problem.

It should have been an elevated system from the airport to the strip, then underground to the Strat & above ground to Fremont.

Agreed, but that ship has sailed.
