Airlines Change or Cancel Your Vegas Flight?

They could end the shutdown tomorrow. You know this, so don't bother claiming otherwise. I'm not going to talk politics in this thread any more--not with rabid MAGA loyalists, anyway. Miller should t have injected his MAGA nonsense into the discussion, and I shouldn't have bothered to point out the obvious. My bad for responding to him.

The democrats could end it tomorrow by agreeing to the same CR  that they voted for 13 times before.

If Trump was king there would be no shutdown.

Our flight to Indy today was canceled.  We are not going to rebook until the senate can get along.  Hopefully our next Vegas flight will make it.

Sorry this trip didn't work out.  Better luck on your next trip!

Dang, that sucks, Brent.  Sorry to hear about that.  Hopefully you'll get there soon.

Dang, so sorry Brent.  Thanks for getting this thread back on topic.  Hope others will chime in regarding their travel disruptions (or none).

My friend in Seattle, whose travel plans for Vegas were disrupted (even though one poster objected to my mentioning it), has some more news today. There are several "rez" casinos and hotel/casinos in Washington state. While many of them are within easy driving distance of Seattle, he found a deal near Portland that was too good to refuse:

Ilani casino, 20 miles north of Portland. Full service hotel, casino, sports book, restaurants, the whole shebang. He, at my suggestion, talked to a host there and mentioned his MGM tier status. The host immediately signed him up for the second highest tier, and offered him a room rate of $99 per night for the entire Thanksgiving weekend (all four nights). Plus some restaurant credits that I don't remember the specifics about.

Ilani has $10 blackjack, the version where all the tens are removed and the player has a wealth of additional options and payouts. The house advantage is 0.42%. He's looking forward to trying it out.

The sports book will probably comp all his meals, given that he intends to give them several thousand in action. They have big screens, player lounges, etc. just like Vegas.

In fact, Ilani, since they opened, has been touting itself as an alternative to flying down to Vegas, with all the attendant hassle. I mention all this because anyone whose Vegas Turkey.Day vacay has been or might be squelched/disrupted should investigate alternative markets. The deals, which of course would have been nonexistent in Vegas for that weekend no matter what, might be pretty good. And you might find something within driving distance.

Hopefully casino.org will post daily cancelations like they did yesterday.  It was interesting to see which airlines and flights were effected at Harry Ried and could give us an idea going forward.

I wasn't planning to go to Vegas over Thanksgiving, as being in that city during a holiday weekend is the height of folly (and expense), but I did research airfares for a friend who has what he calls a "deal"-- only $349 a night plus taxes and resort fees--for Turkey Weekend at the Golden Commode. He really really wants to be there to watch and bet all the foobaw games..

So I've been checking airfares (he's coming from Seattle). The prices in late October were insane. The cheapest round trip ticket was a redeye both ways at $1,298. And now, there's no availability at any price.

He had another question as well: what would happen if he made a reservation and it became impossible for him to get there. I told him that the Commode would likely follow its stated policy of charging him for the first night. So, he'd be out $400. And he has no assurance that any flight he manages to book will actually depart. Trump may greatly hinder air traffic that weekend.

So I found him a local hotel/casino in Washington that has a huge sports book, is an hour's drive away, and happily accepts guests for Th Fri Sat for $369 TOTAL, taxes and fees included. One more Vegas visitor down the drain.

If the reservation at the Golden Nugget is cancelled 72 hours prior to arrivial, there are no charges - as verified when I called the Golden Nugget.

An article I read online--I think it was Forbes, but I'm not sure--said that the cancellations so far are primarily from the smaller airlines and/or the ones that operate primarily out of a single regional hub, because forced cancellations would be much more disruptive to such airlines, due to having a sizable portion of their fleets in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That may have been why my friend in Seattle experienced such problems with booking a flight to Vegas on Alaska. Pretty much every place they go, the flights originate or bounce off of SeaTac.

Only about 5 of the 23  cancelations yesterday were small markets out of LAS
