I rent a car - all in - for 4 days for that much.

Do you mean limo? That is the only way it makes any sense. Otherwise taxi is under 20 each way

Tony doesn't have a bad idea either. Before taxes and fee I have a Dollar Compact for a week 8/9-16 for $99.66.

Even with no tip, no taxi will take you from McCarran to downtown (or back) for less than $20.

Chilcoot, respectfully it is just under $20 for me when I go downtown from the airport (Swenson to Paradise route). Yes, it has been slightly more (up to 21), but no higher. And no, I did not mean with a tip. Certainly that would make it higher.

Champster, I was not trying to be a wise guy to the poster. It was a serious question as I could not figure how the rate was this price.

Perhaps we have different notions of "downtown".

From the taxi stand at McCarran to the Four Queens via Swenson and Paradise, it's 7.4 miles. In Las Vegas, taxis cost $3.30 for the first 1/13th of a mile, another $2.60 per mile after that, and $0.50 per waiting minute, and an extra $1.80 when leaving McCarran.

Even if one assumes no waiting time and no tip, that's $24.14 to downtown, and $22.34 to return. These figures are in line with $22-$27 estimate published by the Taxi Authority.

It's an admittedly small point, but I just think it's best that people not expect to find a taxi between the airport and downtown for $20, I don't think it's ever that cheap.
