Allegiant Air to Charge for Carryon Bags

I was under the understanding that your carry on had to fit under the seat other wise you would have to pay-They stated that the overhead was for suitcases and not carry on. We had book a trip in July before this came out and again they stated what was the 21x14 suit cases that goes on the overhead. Here in south texas very one wants to put all the should bags and shopping bags in the overhead bin and the flight attendence let them.
I don't like all of the expenses that have been added to our vacations. Even with extra baggage fees Allegiant is still a better deal than South West for a comparable trip. Soon, only the wealthy will be able to Fly as the cots keep escalating way too high.
Alaska Airlines has just begun charging $25 at the gate for bags that exceed its carry-on limits. And from the sound of this New York Times article, the largest American carriers are actively considering similar moves.

I don't know if Alaska is simply exchanging one headache (too many large carry-ons trying to fit into a limited space) for another (hassle of collecting a fee from irate passengers at the gate), but I do know that the present situation is pretty inefficient, and that something needs to be done.
"Exceed." Key word. With so many people thinking the rules apply to everyone else, I have no problem with this.
