Bad Taxi Service-Beware

Durning our August trip the following happened:

1-We were long hauled from the airport to the Palazzo. The driver knew we are vegas regulars, yet he took the tunnel without asking. We did not pay him the full fare.

2-We are moving from the Palazzo to Bellagio with our luggage. Driver was very upset that we were not going to the airport. Everything showed in his facial expressions and the speed he drove. He received only half the tip I would give for a short haul.

3-We are going from Bellagio to Terminal 2 at the airport. Driver tries to take the long way via Terminal 1 and I had to correct him. Again another small tip.

I enjoy the convenience of taking cabs and am very generous in tipping the drivers as I realize what a grind their job is. But with my last experience, I am leaning toward the shuttle bus on my Dec. trip. Just be cautious when catching a cab.

Yeah, but how??? How can you tell?
I'll refuse a cab if it is dirty, smelly.
But other shenanigans...who can guess?

So sorry that happened to you.

I've had perfect success going to and from the airport by always telling the driver not to take the tunnel. Did you ask? If you did, it's definitely on the driver. If not . . . .
Are there any hotels where it would be beneficial to take the tunnel?

Also....I don't normally take cabs. Last time I did, the driver said, "Do you want to get there quickly?" I said I wanted to get there the cheapest way. Was he offering the tunnel?

Last week they were doing work on Tropicana and all three lanes that allow you to make a left turn out of the airport were merged into one. It took at least 3 lights to make that left turn and it also tied up all the traffic leaving the airport. In that instance, considering that besides mileage you pay for wait time with a Taxi, it would have been cheaper to take the tunnel since the extra mileage would have been less than the wait time charge. If traffic/construction is not a consideration, there are no strip hotels where taking the tunnel would be beneficial (including Downtown).

Hey Larry,

I wonder if Taxi drivers might lie at times and tell riders that there is construction going on when there isn't in order to long haul them.

Maybe LVAers should try to check out online right before leaving for their trip (or while still at the airport but before they enter a taxi -- if they have a device that allows them to go online) if any construction is going on.

You don't think that taxi drivers would really lie - Ha, Ha ha........ That's a good one.
At present there is evening construction on Paradise between Harmon and Flamingo and they just started a repaving of I-15 from Russell to Downtown, so I-15 is not a fast option at any time of the day for at least the next two weeks. Any time a Taxi driver long hauls you without permission, they can be fined or/and fired so make sure you have their car number and the telephone # of the Taxi Authority (702) 668-4000. You can also check their web site: taxi.state.nv.us for traffic updates and rates.

Thanks, Larry for that information!

Fortunately I've never needed (at least yet) to use a taxi while in LV (I prefer making use of the RTC buses when needed since I drive or I am driven to and from LV), but I have wanted more than anything else to get this kind of information out for all of the people here who come to LV and use taxis to see that there are ways for us to fight what is going on.
