Because Jet Fuel is Expensive

Rightly or wrongly, there tends to be a lot of complaining in this forum about airfares. "Why is it so expensive?" "What used to cost me $230 is now over $400!" Stuff like that.

Why is it so expensive to fly these days?

Because jet fuel is expensive.

According to this AP story, the 48% percent increase in jet fuel over the past year means that it now costs an airline nearly $330 in fuel costs alone to fly just one of our fat butts roundtrip between New York and Los Angeles. Tack on the additional costs of the jet, the pilot to fly it, and the peanut distribution system, and it's no wonder airfares are what they are these days.

It's tough to make a buck flying people around. Think about fuel costs next time you wonder why airfares are what they are.
May be the reason does not mean we have to be happy about it. They are a business.

The day will come, probably sooner than later, when the price of an airline ticket will be based upon the weight of the passenger. Talk about an incentive to shed those unwanted pounds...
