buy the insurance???

A BC car rental company billed a client $1850.00 for a chip in a Toyota windshield - they claimed that a repaired windshield would be inferior and it had to be replaced. The client went to Marketplace - a TV advocate show. They found that chip repair would have been $35.00 and a full replacement would be $895.00.
They then contacted the rental franchisee who did not wish to speak to them. They then contacted the franchisor who said that each rental outlet was privately owned and that this did not reflect the policies of the franchisor. Shortly afterwards the franchisee contacted Marketplace and told them that one of their employers had made an error and the charges were waived. The Franchisor was Budget.
It seems that some will try to screw you - others won't - and there is no set rule or standard.
I will stick with Dollar - they have always treated me better than any other car rental company.

What about a southwest cc? I remember somewhere heaeir ring they tell you not to buy insurance if you rent with their card??
Oh I hope someone answers this from Saylor23, as I always use my southwest credit card to get points on flights.

I never considered the ding to the windshield - one more thing for me to worry about!!!! Jeepers.......
While on vacation in Florida last summer, I backed my Dollar rental into a post as I was turning putting a very healthy dent in the left front quarter panel. It looked worse than it was. The car was still drive able so I continued to use it for the remaining 4days of my trip and called my insurance company Farm Bureau of Indiana and told them of my accident. They gave me a case number and a claims agent name to give to dollar. The OMG look on the rental gal as I returned the car was priceless. I filled out a one page form that she handed me and was glad I had the insurance info to give them. Grabbed my luggage and was on my way in 10 minutes. One week later my insurance claims agent called me to inform me that she had settled the claim and negotiated away all additional fees. I would pay nothing. Not even a deductible. I then called dollar to verify all of this and that was the end of it. This is the first time I was truly impressed by an Insurance Co. but then again I probably pay them 4grand a year in various premiums so good service should be given. I believe my credit card was not charged due to the insurance claim info I had so that might be something to keep in mind. Another point to make is that I have been with this company for more than 30 years with very little in the way of claims.

1) The odds of something happening are small.
2) The price of the "insurance" is very high. In the long run(even in the short/middle run) you will be way ahead by declining it.
3) What they SAY they can charge you for and what they actually CAN charge you for are often two very different things.

The coverage from your own policy and/or from your credit card will be fine.
Okay, I am going to try this once more. I found a car from Advantage Rent A Car - compact - total charges for the week with taxes 167.51. I feel anything under 200 for the week is a good deal.

I really need a car, as we stay at off strip properties, Station Casinos, etc, and it makes it so much easier to get around.
