Changing tickets

I have a trip planned on SWA which was originally for 12 days roundtrip. I am considering adding another two weeks to the trip and going to multiple cities. I checked the price to keep the first part of the flight and the price tripled.

Am I better off to keep the original tickets then no show for the return flight or wait until I have completed the first part of the trip and then cancel the return ticket. I would then go to another city by air and fly home from there. Thoughts.

Sorry posted twice.

Could you post your original itinerary and then the itinerary you want to switch to? Not the dates, but the routing? Would likely help us explain.

Assuming you bought a nonrefundable roundtrip, because Southwest doesn't have cancellation fees I don't think there's a financial difference between cancelling a return ticket and being a return-trip no-show. Either way, I think they just credit your account for the return fare amount, a credit that expires a year from the date of purchase.

I don't think you have many options here. If it's been a while since you bought the tickets and the trip's getting close, it wouldn't be surprising that airfare during that period is now higher. And Seattle's hardly a stopover city between Las Vegas and Manchester for Southwest.

You might consider merely postponing your return from Las Vegas, and then buying a separate roundtrip from Las Vegas to Seattle and back. That might not cause your Southwest roundtrip to go up much. Alaska, Delta, and Southwest fly to Seattle nonstop. You might also consider Bellingham, as both Alaska and Allegiant fly that route nonstop and at really low prices, it's been a bit of a market war between those two. Note, however, that if you check bags, Southwest doesn't do inline transfers with any other airlines.

Good luck.
