Feds Say No To Jet Blue Spirit Merger

This is a merger that should not happen.  Jet Blue is attempting to foist their failing business model on the American public. I am glad the Feds said no. Now it's up to Jet Blue to decide if they want to spend 10 of millions on litigation in the off chance a Federal court will overrule their objections.

Unfortunately, that business model has been very successful when implemented by Spirit, Frontier, and others. Also, shit like "you must pay $50 for us to fly your bag" has become routine--and accepted by the public.

In other words, the "fly in a sardine can and pay for everything, including oxygen" model works; it's just that Jet Blue is managed by retarded baboons.

(I'm looking forward to when the oxygen masks drop, you have 15 seconds to swipe your credit card and get the oxygen flowing before you pass out and suffocate. Unless, of course, you had the foresight to buy the Inflight Oxygen Package ($59) along with your ticket.)

I like Spirit and Frontier. I recently priced a direct Louisville to Las Vegas flight on Spirit for April. It was $255 including a checked bag, a personal item, seat selection, priority boarding and 1st class no security line wait on the return from Vegas. No other airline even offered a direct flight and even with the layovers the other options were in the $400+ to $600+ range.

I flew into Vegas on Delta from St. Louis back in December. While the fare was competitive, I booked basic economy, it had a layover in Salt Lake City, I didn't get to choose my own seat nor could I pay extra to do so and I boarded in the very last group. I got assigned a middle seat on both legs of the trip. The layover plus deplaning and boarding another plane added about three hours of travel time to the journey.

I returned from that trip via Southwest a day later than I was supposed to because of two canceled flights and when I landed I discovered my luggage didn't make the trip with me.

Yeah, I am a Spirit and Frontier fan. For those of us that fly out of smaller markets, they are often our best and a lot of times our only options. In fact, without them I would have never started coming to Vegas again.  I am simply not gonna cough up $600 to fly to Vegas on Southwest.

Also, keep in mind United no longer includes luggage with their base fares on most domestic flights.

Thanks for the info, Mark.  Southwest has apparently ended, for the most part, their non-stop flights from my city to Las Vegas.  Formerly SWA had one NS every day each way for decades; made it easy to plan trips.  Even as their fares increased it was still worth it (to us) because of non-stop flights.   Now fares are so high and no non-stops.   Boo.

I think my decision point--as in, not to fly at all--came when I took Spirit from SFO to Vegas and door-to-door, including renting a car blah blah, from closing my front door to opening my hotel room door, my elapsed time was nine hours.

It takes 9 1/2 to drive, and you don't have to rent a car when you get there.

I realize that driving may not be an attractive option if you live, say, 2,000 miles away, but Jesus Christ, has flying ever become a tedious, time-consuming, expensive shitshow. I wonder why more people aren't driven to regional gambling markets that are much closer. After all, Vegas doesn't offer anything unique any more; you can go to Atlantic City or Biloxi (etc.) or to the Heap Big Wampum Casino of the Sockitoome Tribe to blow your dough.

Well gee whilikers, was SWA tracking my posts here on LVA?  Last night I cruised their flight schedules that they just opened up from now to the end of first week in November.  What did I see, but a non-stop flight every day of the week from home to Vegas and Vegas to home, starting in September.  I'm in shock!

You should experiment to see if you have more pull than you thought. Post your opinion that Southwest should cut all its fares in half for LVA subscribers.

Yet, the Wall Street Journal has named Jet Blue the worst domestic airline two years in a row.
