Getting around without a car

Just checked the advisor...better late than never...what airport are you departing from in OHIO
You all should be grateful for Las Vegas. You don't know how many times we have rented a car in other towns and find out that the Hotel we are staying at charges as much as $25 per night to park there (examples are Newark, NJ, Atlanta, GA and New Orleans LA. Except for downtown, parking is free anywhere in Las Vegas.

Downtown is also free if you park in the lot across the street from MSS and take the ticket to the MSS cashier for reimbursement. Anywhere in downtown is within easy walking distance of that lot.
Lhfried, that is so true. Or, the resorts charge for overnight valet and free self park is a long hike from the rooms.

Dee: I leave from Detroit on Delta. What about you? Leave sometime around 7:30 pm...they keep changing the time.
FYI: there is one hotel that charges for parking. If you stay at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club on the Strip (north of Circus Circus) you have to pay $8 day to self park. It's a great place to stay, but since they started charging for parking I haven't stayed there. Am staying at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club at the Convention Center this time. Parking is nice and close there, and it's a nice, quiet hotel
We go to Vegas once or twice a year, and enjoy not having to drive. Walk more to balance out our search for the best buffet.
I hardly ever rent a car and rely mostly on public transportation. During my latest visit, I went to the downtown bus depot and got a RTC transit card, for identification purposes, and as I'm a senior, the fares were $1.00 on the routes I took. I avoid the Deuce and Express buses, wherever possible, as they are far more expensive. I use the Westcliff bus from Fremont to the airport, quite often as well. It runs about every 20 minutes and it's pretty quick.

The shuttles are great between the Boyd properties and the strip. I often stay at Silver Sevens and get a courtesy shuttle to and from the airport and the strip, as well.

The entire trip from September 4 to 11, I probably spent under $5.00 on transportation. I just planned my trips using the local bus system and did a fair bit of walking. It meant more of my trip budget was used for food, and gambling!!
We have made at least 4 trips a year to Las Vegas and have never rented a car and have only used a taxi a couple of times. As a senior with an RTC id you do get a discount on non-strip routes. Used to get it for the strip or only had to pay an upcharge. Of course, you do have to plan ahead for where you want to go and when you want to be there. I'd rather use the RTC and the shuttles though than having to use a rental car.
I also rarely rent a car. I'm at the Rio later this month and will take the shuttle to the strip, take the Deuce downtown and other shuttles if I need to. And I don't mind doing a lot of walking. As said above it somewhat offsets the buffets (and booze)
Here's the thing...if you buy the coupon books (American Casino Guide...Las Vegas Advisor)...they will largely pay for your rental car in savings by eating off the strip...and offstrip matchplays/slot play. And the thing is, you really cant utilize those coupon books to their full effect without a rental car. So they kinda compliment each other.

I would rent anyway. I get bored with both the strip and downtown after a few days. I like finding those little neighborhood dive joints way out in the sticks.
