I'm done with driving from Phoenix to Las Vegas

I chose to live in because one of my accounts is based here although I could have run it out of Vegas.

I have 1 son in Vegas and 1 in Phoenix.

In random order

1- better medical care; we use the Mayo Clinic

2- airports are the same

3- traffic is better & road improvements are done faster (see the 15 in Vegas)

4- being from NY taxes are much better

5- gas is cheaper

6- warmer in the winter; 74 today

7- more pro and college sports

8-better entertainment

9-Slightly cheaper

Arizona has an income tax but it is pretty low (2.5% flat). The sales tax in Vegas is 8.375% and in Phoenix is 9.1%, both are lower than the 9.75% or more found in LA County although many suburbs in other counties are at 8% or below. California taxes are of course higher for middle income people and very high for folks with mid six figure incomes and up, but sometimes it may be good to move to a lower but not zero tax state so that the other state has some skin in the game, to affirm that you a resident.

Arizona, being run by old wackadoodles, has a bizarre sales tax system. You can be taxed by as many as five separate entities at once. I first encountered this when visiting Laughlin; I crossed the river to grab lunch at McDonald's and was shocked to see an 11.25% sales tax on my receipt.

The real thriller, though, was driving through Parker, heading south from Lake Havasu. Most of the town is on the rez--I don't remember the tribe --and the sales tax there is an astounding 21%. My $5 McLunch was $6.05.

I don't know how AZ's overall taxation system compares with that of other states, but woo hoo, sales taxes are strongly regressive, which seems like a bad idea for a state packed to the gills with retirees.
