JB is looking to add more routes & planes, but they would have to spend a lot to upgrade the Spirit planes

Probably one of the dumbest moves by an airline ever. People that fly Spirit won't pay extra to fly on Jet Blue. Spirit's fleet is newer so it makes no sense to upgrade their planes. It's also a strong possibility this merger won't get approved by Federal regulators. The big winner is Frontier as they can use that money they were going to spend on Spirit and move into Spirit markets and get all those Spirit customers that aren't going to fly on Jet Blue.
Frankly, the move by Jet Blue reeks of desperation.
I believe that airlines are generally bought for their routes and gate assets...........not so much for the planes.

Depends on the condition of the fleet. Spirit's planes are all in the first third of their design life.
What I find interesting is that Spirit has yet to remove the merger with Frontier announcement from the top of their webpage. It looks to me like Spirit management isn't interested in the Jet Blue deal.
FWIW - I would imagine that Spirit is waiting to see if either Frontier or Jet Blue will increase their offers. Money talks.

I don't see Frontier increasing their bid. Either way, it is a win-win for them. The Jet Blue deal will have a difficult time getting past the government anti-trust regulators. They were already throwing up warning signs with the Frontier deal saying it would lead to less competition in the ultra-low-cost segment. If Jet blue buys it all of those routes and planes would be removed from that segment. If Frontier buys it the routes and planes would still be serving the same market.
Spirit has formally rejected Jet Blue's bid citing the unlikelihood of getting regulatory approval.
Just as well. Mergers--in any industry--have a way of stifling competition.
I expect either Spirit or Frontier to announce "Coffin Class," where you are sealed into a box for the duration of the flight. Inflight drink service will be available if you pay $10 for a straw.

That would be fine by me if they would put me to sleep before I got in. I kind of like the idea of being shipped around like freight.
