The Feds are already suing Jet Blue over their Northeast Alliance deal because it leads to less competition in the full-service/legacy segment. It is bizarre to think the Feds will allow them to simply remove roughly half the seats from the ultra-low-cost carrier market. Not to mention there is no way Jet Blue would continue to serve a lot of those small markets that Spirit does as they wouldn't be able to fill the planes at the higher prices. I just don't see how the Feds approve a merger between the two.
Truth be told, Jet Blue finds itself uncompetitive in the market because of the ultra-low-cost carriers. They are circling the drain and desperately trying to find a way to claw back out before they disappear.

Wow Mark is wrong again

First move will be to remove the pay toilets on Spirit planes (:
If one looks at Jet Blue's financials, it's not steller. A merger may help that.

They are uncompetitive in the market. If they were smart they would convert the Jet Blue planes to Spirt planes and ditch the Jet Blue name. Spirit has a higher profit margin. Jet Blue simply found itself non-competitive in the marketplace so they did what all good capitalists do. Rather than innovate to adjust to new market conditions, they buy out the competition and shut it down so they no longer have to compete.
Unfortunately, this is the way capitalism works in modern America. It is not about producing a superior product or service. It is about setting yourself up in a market with few competitors so you can force people to buy your shitty product/service.
I am still hopeful that the DOJ will shut it down as it will mean higher fares and fewer options for consumers. Small market folks will be left out in the cold altogether as JetBlue won't be able to fill those planes at the much higher price point meaning they will withdraw from those small markets. In a lot of those markets, Spirt is the only one serving them.
