Long Hauling - Common Practice

I am glad to see that the TA (taxi cab authority) is clamping down on long hauling. I just got back from Vegas and I had to use a cab a few times while there. I have rented a car before and I am rather familiar with the city streets.

In every instance, and I mean every single instance, there was an attempt to long haul me. I actually had to "remind" the drivers which was was the most efficient (and cost effective) way of going. I even told one driver that I was glad there was no tunnel near by as I though he would try to combine our route with it.

One driver told me that the cab companies place a sales quota on the drivers and that long hauling helps meet that quota. In another case, a driver said she didn't have enough money to give me change which resulted in an additional $1 tip for the short distance route. To me it's only an additional dollar, but the manner in which it was conceived was so dishonest.

Frankly, I am sick and tired of the crap that the cabbies try. I am glad that I usually rent a car.
I'm glad I don't have this issue. We always rent a car.
I just booked Dollar Thur to Mon in Sept for $159.00 all in. Even if I only use it to go to the hotel and back to the airport I would rather do that than give another cent to a crooked cab driver.
I agree, I hate using taxis, we've been subjected to plenty of long-haul attempts, drivers who conveniently forget how to speak English when there's a conflict, etc. There was a recent study by the Nevada Taxi Authority that showed something like 28% of all fares were long-hauled in Nevada (I imagine that it's a little higher for Vegas, given that it was for the entire state).
