My buddy just rented from Payless last week. He reserved a midsize on line, and when he arrived at their desk at the transportion center the female agent presented him with a $25 higher rate. When he complained and showed her his confirmation she pointed out that the small print stated it was only an estimate. (I believe that is meant to relate to the everchanging taxing charges and formulas.) Because hewas running late and needed to pick up myself and another friend from the airport he accepted the overcharge and was assigned a Hundai Accent (clearly a subcompact, not a compact or midsize). After a cramped trip we complained to the guy in the Payless booth in the return garage, and he admitted we were short-changed on the selection of the car, and he pointed out that the $25 charge beyond my friend's confirmation rate covered a roadside assistance clause. He apologized, refunded the $25, and gave us a customer survey card with the female desk agent's name, so we could report our experience to the corportate boys. He was great, but this never should have happened. Be familiar with your confirmation, and be firm at the desk; apparently some employees are really working on the commission angle with regard to rental extras.
