Payless Head's Up

Used Payless once and only once. They added the roadside assist, told them I did not want or need it, said it was required, told them if it was required it would have been listed when I made my reservation. Clerk got pissed but took it off. I had another reservation down the row to use but did not find it necessary. However never again.

You gotta know those clerks get commission from selling the extras.

I'd hate to be a car rental agent. All the customer complaints, being hammered by the boss to upsell things the customer doesn't want or need.

I'm all for saving money. But one thing I don't understand is with all of the negative reviews for rental car companies like Payless, Advantage and Fox for example, why would anyone rent from them??

I've been reading stories just like this one on internet forums for years and their price would have to be 50% lower than any of the major companies out there to even get me to consider it.

I recently read on another forum where a guy booked through one of these companies to save $20 on a weekly rental. Again, I'm all for saving money but between the time wasted and then the bullshit you have to deal with, is it really worth all of the aggravation for such little savings?

I have always rented with the big name car companies in Vegas other than Firefly once and it went fine
once I realized that I wasn't getting jerked around when the agent told me my wife couldn't be a free additional driver. I came to find out that that was a fairly recent change. Now the thought some one should,t rent from a certain company based on user reviews may not be fool proof. I was out in Vegas 3 or 4 days before my wife came out for a week with me I figured the 3or4 days before she got there I would save some money by renting from Payless Sav- Mor or Fox, just tie she got there and then move onto an Alamo weekly rental.so I started to look for reviews for my 3 prospective companies to rent from and sadly all was seeing were mostly 1/2* and 1* reviews. So i thought I have to ditch this plan and just stick to the big name companies until I decided to search them thru a consumer reports link like the other companies I had.Guess what plug in Avis, Budget,Hertz, Alamo, Dollar, Enterprise you see 1/2* ,1*, 1 1/2* I ended up going with Fox for the 3 or 4 days , it went fine other than an irate customer lobbing f-bombs at the manager be cause he felt he had been treated unfairly.

I took the plunge and rented from Payless for 4 days in Ft Myers in April. They were literally more than 50% cheaper than the other companies. We'll see how it goes. I prepaid - so I'm hoping that saves me from the clerk/desk experience. Ultimately - as long as I only pay the price I booked for then I'll be okay with it - even if I have to bitch-slap a few people =)

sounds like a good plan. pre-paid will help to avoid some of the up-sell bs. if they start I would just tell them I have already spent all of my car rental budget -- just gimme the car.

When issues like this happen it best to let main office know and let them know you will pass your bad experience on to others.
UPDATE: I finished my 5 day rental in Ft Myers Florida with Payless. Their YELP page is riddled with bad reviews. My experience was actually fine. I prepaid and returned the car with a full tank of gas. There was no hard sell of stuff I didn't want. No extra charges. Nothing bad at all.

I don't doubt other peoples' horror stories but my experience was actually pleasant.
Prepaying for your car is the reason for no problems with your rental.
it sounds like pre-pay may be the way to go then.
I will NEVER do a prepaid with Payless again. I booked with Payless thinking this will ease the pain at the check out, 2nd mistake was I booked my flight with Allegiant Air. My pickup time for the car was @ 10:30pm but after waiting two hours past departure time my flight was cancelled and rescheduled for the next day. After getting the announcement that nite, I tried to contact Payless but the message on the answering machine said to call back during business hours. The next morning I called them back and told the person who answered that I will be their to pick up the car at 2:30 pm. The employee told me that by not showing up by 11:59pm the day of the contract that it became cancelled as a no show. I told him I'm not expecting to get refunded for the first day (since it was Allegiant air faught) but I do expect to continue on with the remains days that I paid for. His response was I could rebook at the current price but I have been charged for the first reservation with no type of refund, After telling him hell no, I got onto my computer and book with Fox car rental something I thought I will never do because of the off site lot. I must say after taking that 2nd shuttle to their lot everything else was alright in fact I will book with them on my next trip.
Wow! Payless screwed you royally. Sorry to hear that.
