I ususally do my research on Costco Travel using the Low Price Finder. It automaticlly finds the best coupon and rate for you. You do not have to enter a membership number to use this tool.
I make note of the ID and coupon code of the offer I like (if any - found under Terms and conditions (click on) for that particular rental).
Then I go to Alamo's web site and enter the codes and information Costco gave me. 99 times out of 100 it will give me the same rate.
There are a few reasons for doing this.
- Costco's site does not allow you to make changes or cancel the rental online - you must call. Alamo's does let you modify online if a lower rate shows up.
- Costco's web site does not allow you to check in online. However, you can check in at the airport kioske with a Costco rental if you know your ALAMO confirmation number (there are two confirmation numbers - Costco's and Alamo's).
- As you said, Costco's site requires your membership number. Alamo's site does not. When using a Costco code, I have never been asked for my Costco card, even though I am a member.
Check the Costco Low price Finder every single day - and again in the evening. Also check Dollar's City Rate for comparison.
The Costco code lets you add a second driver for free. Read the terms and conditions about this - there may be restrictions.
Some of this may have changed since Alamo changed their web site. Costco's information may have changed too.
Finally - I VERY HIGHLY recommend a Costco membership if there is a store near you.
