Rental Cars

This might be a stupid question, we have never rented a car when we were in Vegas. Not sure with all the traffic if we could find our way around. I husband said that all the rental cars now have a gps system, so you can't get lost. I'm not too sure. Can anyone help with this question.
Thanks
Not all cars have a GPS. My experience is that you can pay extra for GPS on most vehicles.
But, a good map will help out just as much. Don't rely on the map from the car rental companies....they're not very detailed.

Just get out there and get lost a couple of times....you'll get the lay of the land and have a great time hanging out where the locals go.

Thak you very much for the info.
I have a Garmin portable GPS at home and take it with me when we go to Las Vegas....and we never get lost.

And if you do get lost in the Las Vegas valley, unless you're REALLY lost, you can always see the Vegas strip and just keep "heading towards the Stratosphere." It's fairly easy to get lost in Vegas, but it's real easy to get unlost. If you have wheels, take the time to check out Hoover Dam.
We always rent a car....This year we took our GPS with us ...If you rent one from the car rental place it will cost you at lease $12.00 pr day....Also check out what your personal car insurance covers and your credit card too....We found out that we were covered for all that we needed between the 2....Also for roadside assistance (flat tire, locking keys in car, etc) we were covered by AAA.....
We take our own GPS to Vegas for our rent a car also.

I even took the time once to enter all the local's casinos that we wanted to visit and it's a breeze!

Having a good map also helps too - sometimes you might not exactly want to go the way the GPS is sending you. AAA has a great map of Vegas.

Even if you don't own one, you can find them pretty inexpensively these days. Just make sure you "try it out" at home first to get used to how it works.

As long as you have a designated driver, you should be fine.

Good luck!

I bought a smaller Tom-Tom Express for $49 at Walmart just before Christmas. I plan on taking it to Vegas for our February trip. I agree with the above poster, you want to take it out on a few practice runs before you get to Vegas.
I use MAPS on my Iphone, if needed. (not in vegas, but, ymmv.)

Don't pay extra for Rental car GPS, unless you absolutely have to.

I used a city map from AAA at first, now I use my iphone maps. My husband does the driving and I do the navigating.

Vegas is a grid. Most streets run S. & N. or E. & W.
Use the stratosphere for a marker.
If you see red rocks in the mountains you are heading West.
A bus driver once pointed out to us the Sleeping Indian Mountain. It is on the East side of the valley.

Tropicana, Flamingo, Desert Inn, Saraha, Charleston, all run East to West, while Boulder Hwy. Nellis, Decatur, Rainbow, Durango run South to North. Rancho runs on a diagonal.

Street signage is very poor, mostly on the street itself utilizing arrows. A lot of right lanes turn into right turn only lanes so be on the look out. In Michigan there is usually a sign saying that the lane is a right lane turn only, probably better signs there because of the snow. They just do not use them here.

One thing that you have to watch out for is the pedestrian crossing walks. They can be in the middle of the block and you have to stop for pedestrians. The police are stepping up their watch on this as there has been a lot of car/pedestrian accidents. Something we had to get use to here.

Also, people can u-turn at the lights, so be on the look for that. This is very rare in Michigan, so something else we had to look out for.

A lot of times you see people turning right from the left lane or vice versa. There is also a lot of motor scooters that are not licensed and use the roads, I believe illegally. These things happen anywhere, but Vegas has a lot of out of towners so just be careful.

Please do not let this discourage from renting a car, as it is the best way to get around and get the best deals from the local casinos. Like any other place, you have to drive defensively.
