Southwest says "No"

Once again Southwest demonstrates why I consider them the airlines of choice.-------------

Southwest Airlines said it, too, will not allow phone conversations in flight, and Virgin America is leaning against it.

"Our customers overwhelmingly say that this is not an option they would enjoy onboard," said a Southwest spokeswoman.

A Virgin America spokesman said, "Although we will review any proposed rule changes in this area, we remain committed to maintaining a quiet and restful cabin environment."

Last week, the Federal Communications Commission voted to craft a rule that would allow passengers to use in-flight mobile voice services, which would pave the way for airlines to install cellular transponders.

On Wednesday, three airlines (Delta, United and JetBlue) said they don't plan to equip their planes with the technology to allow in-flight cellphone calls, because most of their customers want a cabin without phone conversations.
That's great news.
I cannot imagine any airline allowing constant phone conversations and believe me they would be constant during flights. We have survived all these years by putting our phones away during flight. Please let me read my book in peace. Since I almost never fly anyone but SWA this post, if accurate, is of great relief.
I am so glad they decided against the phone calls, but I am really surprised that they didn't cave in to the possibilty of making big bucks from them . Bob

Any news about e-cigarettes? They are technically not allowed but people use them anyway and no one says anything. They should publicize that policy as well IMHO.
I have never seen anyone with an e-cig on a plane. They are not allowed I am sure.
I think e-cigs on a plane are safe, but their use will be a matter of decorum and respect. I think they deserve the same treatment as VOIP calls, yo-yos, mankinis, limburger sandwiches, and porn. Just foolish to inject into a crowded airplane.
For a change I actually agree with you Chilcoot. I sometimes get a tuna sub from Subway to eat on the four hour trip back to Indy and this actually makes me feel a little guilty if I get the impression that someone close to me does not like that tuna smell. I have no use for individuals who have no respect for the comfort and well being of fellow travelers.
The new SWA planes have double emergency exits mid-plane, thereby adding another row of extra legroom seating. The overhead bins accommodate carry ons vertically too.

We rode Southwest last week. They said "no smoking and that includes no electronic cigarettes" in their pre-flight announcement.
