So, Spirit shuts down leaving thousands in limbo.
LVA says today that they were the second largest carrier at Vegas airport. That surprises the heck outta me...never would I have thought that.
I guess SWest will raise prices even more since they'll probably be even larger in the LV market.
I live in N Tx and, comparing SW and American to Vegas, American is now less expensive than SW on about 90% of the flights I checked.
What killed Spirit was the doubling of jet fuel prices due to the Trump war. They had some cash reserves, but burned through them faster than they expected when jet fuel soared above $5/gal. Jet Blue is staggering now for the same reason, but they had a little more cash in reserve when Trump started thumping his chest.
The effect will be felt worldwide. Southwest will certainly jack up their fares. One thing I've read that we might see is a huge increase in things like bag fees, "premium" seat charges, and booking fees, to avoid increasing fares as such but still increasing the price of a ticket.
Over 150 airlines worldwide have canceled summer flights due to skyrocketing fuel costs. What's even worse is that there's no indication that those costs have leveled or will level off. Jet fuel could hit $6, $7, making it simply impossible for airlines to operate profitably, since they'd have to jack up fares by so much, that would disincentivize travel.
I'd suggest that you drive to Vegas instead--only fifteen hours!--but then, gas will be $5 a gallon, or worse!
