TSA Tidbits re: Money and Expired Licenses

I am at an airport now headed back to NYC. The guy in front of me going through the super duper scanner was holding a wad of cash in each of his hands. Checked with two different screeners after I went through and both said it wasn't a problem to hold cash in your hand. The second guy said "we prefer it."

Second note relates to the fact that my license expires while I am in Vegas and I may not receive the new one before I leave. TSA reps at two different airports have confirmed there's a one month grace period although I should be prepared for extra screening and a potential background check on my return flight. I have no problem with that and frankly I do believe extra screening is important. Wanted to pass that on to those of you who may find yourselves in that same boat.
Do you have someone picking up your mail while your in Vegas? If so,you could have them over night your license to the casino you'll be at.
Not really but I am working on that as a potential option.
Can you pick up your new license in person?

In AZ, they print them at the MVD.

Good info---thanks. Since 9/11 we have been traveling with two IDs---license plus DMV Phoyo ID, and or passport. Often wondered, though, about an ID expiring on the trip or if we lost our only one? Thanks again for your experience.
Very interesting FFLowers, thanks for posting that here. I hope to soon to test the "hold wads of cash in your hands" method of speeding thru McCarran security.

Me too Chilcoot. Me too.

Lisa, I am so bad that I waited this long to deal with my soon-to-be expired license. Hadn't thought about it much as I live mostly in NYC and don't drive here. Going to check first thing in am.

David, my pleasure.
FF: Re the cash, I think it just dpends on the particular TSA screener. I've gone thru with the cash in my pocket and a couple of times the TSA screener will ask me what's in my pocket (now there's a straight line if I ever heard one, but I sure won't banter with them ... ) I'll say cash, and they'll have me take it out and hold it. Others ignore it. I really don't like taking it out because then everyone can see it.

A good backup ID is the passport card.. you can get one for $55 .. $30 dept of state charge and $25 appl. fee good for 10 years only $30 to renew, takes about a month to get one though and you do need passport photos.

Glad someone posted about passport expiring. I just looked and we have less than 1 year left. I know you have to have an updated photo 2X2 . Do you have get a form from the US Post office and fill it out if everything remained the same? What are the costs differences between a passport book vs a passport card. Glad this was posted it casued me to check. We usually carry them with us during any type of travel.
