My previous experiences with Priceline for rental cars put me with both Hertz and Avis.
I've found that the most significant savings with Priceline was for hotels and not rental cars.
My strategy is to typically check every day or two for a lower rate and continue to trade down in price. Once it's close to my travel date or I see that the pricing has remained stagnant for a few looks, I bid priceline for 15% less than my total cost to see if it turns up something. If it does, great. If not, I keep the deal that I have.
The savings as a percentage off of going rate seem to be more significant with hotel rooms....not unusual to get a room at 50% or more less than the best rate you'd get on the hotels website. With rental cars, it's typically not that much. 15% off a $30/day rental car isn't anything to write home over so if it's not at least that much, it's likely not worth doing.
I would encourage you to check rental car rates daily....they move quite a bit. I'll literally check up to the time my flight lands to see if there's a better deal out there. This frankly has been a better strategy than priceline....and I'm a real big priceline fan.
