Delta Amex Gold Offer 80k miles for 3k spend

They bummped up the referral bonus this month making it worthwhile.

You get 80k miles for the 3k spend.  That is enough miles to get you to Asia and back on Korean Air. I have checked LAX, SFO, ORD & LAS all have RT award flights to Asia available under 80k points.

Of course your milage will vary depending on your travel dates and destination.

Where for example? What approximate dates? Because I can't find anything close to what you are describing. So please educate me.

I looked a year out. The LAS departure was rare.

You mentioned that the Delta card bumped up the "referral" bonus. Freudian slip?

.

And when you said "Asia" you meant Seoul and only Seoul, right? Rather limiting.

The referral bonus I am speaking of is what someone gets when they are referred to Amex by an existing customer.

Last month it was 40k points for the same spend.  This month it is 80k.  When I signed up for this card myself my final offer was 70k.

I wasn't talking about Seoul.  I was looking at flights to BKK with a layover in ICN.

I went back and looked again and saw many of them for 76k points RT LAX to BKK.

You can also find flights into TPE via China Airlines at a similar price.

Here are some LAX to BKK RTs (Main Cabin)with a layover in ICN.

And another 78,000 miles on the way back = 154,000 miles. So 90k Delta miles won't cut it for a round trip in your example. And if either Korean or Delta changes there rates or programs before you book, you basically have no way to get to Asia. But I hear that Atlanta is very nice!

Here's how to get the round trip with just one card: get a Chase Ink Unlimited for 90,000 points, zero fee instead of the $95 Delta, for $8k spend. Or a Capital One Venture will get you almost there and back, $95 fee, $4k spend. And you'll have lots of transfer partners: Thai Airway, Etihad, EVA, Cathay Pacific, JAL, and more, so you get to flexibly choose the best deal. That's much better than getting locked into a single airline currency like Delta miles.

Actually, that is round trip. Here is an example with the best departure and arrival time.

Also note if you book a fare out of a competitive market like LAX, what Delta tries to sell you when paying with money rather than points is basic economy with no seat selection. When you book via an award flight you automatically get bumped to main cabin with seat selection included.

That flight in cash instead of points is $1217.70 giving me a redemption value of roughly 1.6 miles per-point if my math is correct. If you account for the $111.60 you still end up at 1.5 miles per-point rounding up (1.45 to be exact).

All in all if you use those 80k miles in a similar fashion it works out to $1,160 in free air travel.

Ah, I see what you did there, you changed the date by two months to fit your scenario. That must have taken some work. Of course, if you wanted to come back a day or two or three earlier from BKK, you're out of luck. No flights. And while you're earning the sign-up bonus, if Delta changes their policies or pricing, you get to visit Atlanta instead.

Meanwhile, with flexible currency like Chase UR, Amex MR, or Capital One Miles, you could fly when you want and you wouldn't be subject to the whims of just one airline. You could fly Delta or Thailand or EVA or Sun or Korean, and more. And you could even fly on the original date, that you mistakenly chose. You can't do that with Delta miles.

And what the hell is "miles-per-points?" I've been pretty serious about this for seven years and I never heard of that one.

Thanks for information. My Alaska mileage plan has gone up.Also my sons United plan.Right now only doing domestic. Some cost more then international.
